Into the Incubator...

Soon. I had several problems with my computer the day before yesterday and wound up disconnecting my USB card reader and, to be perfectly honest, I don't remember why I did that at all. Anyway, I have to open it up and reconnect it before I can get my pictures.

Thank you. From the look of the babies, I think our "Red" is definitely a rooster. (I've been saying for for weeks, but my guy doesn't believe me, since he hasn't crowed even once.) I've never seen Red jump Buffy. I thought she was Igor's girl. But, strangely, quite a few of the little ones coming for Buffy's eggs have yellow legs...

Oh, I took a very good look at Mystery Chick from the orange egg. He's got feathered feet. And the one I thought was a bantam Silkie...I took a better look at the egg he came from. Nope. His a big white standard sized fluff ball.

I just grabbed the camera and got pictures of yesterday's hatchlings, then I went into the kitchen to check on the bators.

I heard the peeping before I got in the door. So, when I get these pics off the camera finally, I have a nice picture of a little red chick half in the egg.

Oh, emvickrey, I thought an ee was an ee no matter what, since they are a not specific mixed breed anyway. I have a few ee x barred rocks (I suspect they are roosters, though) and one ee x australorp.

Our hatchling number is up to 8, with the birth of a normal sized bantam chick (it's about 1.5x or twice as big as the little one that hatched two days ago). Both bantams are little chipmunks.

I pulled up some more pictures of chicks trying to identify the mystery chick from the orange egg. I still haven't identified him, but what I thought was an extremely large Silkie turns out to look just like pictures of Buff Laced Polish chicks, but with feathered legs. (Or do they have feathered legs and I just missed that? I've never had a Polish before.)

neferset.........I think he's a roo too. A very pretty roo. Maybe he's not crowing cuz he's not top chicken?

That's the hatch I really can't wait for since I've never hatched ducks and geese before, but I also have an egg that has a messed up air cell and a live chick I could see moving around. I've really been pulling for that one. His hatch day is Wednesday.

The Boss Freedo Jr (son of our last boss roo, Freedo) is the one on the stump flapping his wings and crowing for the camera. He's a tough little guy who takes on roosters 3x his size and still is boss.

Red also hangs out with Igor and Buffy. Buffy pretended she was Red's mother when he was little. Maybe that has to do with it? Something social at any rate.

I do love the chicks he's made. We don't have a Buff Orpington rooster and, lacking one, he's the best looking choice for a cross.

I had a bad afternoon. I won't go into part of it, but I'll talk about something else. It started this morning. I noticed the humidity dropped scary low and there were some eggs where the chicks had broken through the shells and the membrane was turning white. I carefully wet the membranes and waited. After a couple of hours, I created actual holes in the membranes so they could breath.

This caused all four chicks to begin unzipping simultaneously. Two, I noticed, had started to bleed a bit. (The other two hatched just fine and are already in the brooder.) I watched nervously on and off all day, fearing the worst, especially on top of something else that happened today. Well, we have our fall barbeque tomorrow, so we had to go take care of some things. When we got back, both chicks were out and walking around. (One has a little little piece of the membrane stuck to his head, but that's the only thing weird about them.)
