Howdy folks- I live in Vt. The path to chicken ownership (successful that is) has been littered with a few bodies.
Now I have 12 laying hens feathering out- gorgeous, gorgeous girls- 2 hens pre-dating those younger hens, one of whom murderered some of her younger kin- sheās an incredibly fabulous Swedish Flower Hen, Gertie, scary smart, so much character, slightly devious, part parrot??? and my soul mate Yeti, a Faverole. So gentle, dignified and regal. Yeti was caught by a neighborās dog and nearly killed but is now thriving thanks in part to the maggots that made a home in a puncture wound I couldnāt see. They cleaned her wound out then popped out like popcorn- how many of us ever think weāll see our chicken chowing down on the maggots that are emerging from her back?!?!? I have 3 roosters, (Falcon, Apricot and Midge),one eats from my hand- Falcon. I think heās a Swedish Flower. The other 2 may be Icelandic and maybe Hedemora. The ducks are 2 Mallard males and a Khaki Campbell/Cuyoga mix, plus 2 chocolate and 2 black Indian Runners. They are my meditation and my loves! Happy to post pictures. Love this amazing site. Itās been massively helpful to me.
