Intro to a Noob

Hello, Stephanie, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
You don't like birds, you don't like getting dirty and you don't like being hot. And you want chickens??!! Yep. You're nuts!
I hope you find them as addictive and enjoyable as the rest of us!

Yes, you read that correctly! lol And I hope I do, too.

I hope she at least likes poop.

I hate poop.
Poop boards are a must.

Everyone hates poop. But I cloth diapered my son and did just fine with that poop, so maybe I'll be alright! ;) I'm planning to do PDZ under the roost (THANK YOU, POOP BOARD THREAD!) so I think it shouldn't be terrible...
I'm having to convince my husband (whose father has raised chickens on and off for years) that this won't smell as much. He doesn't believe me. lol

Keep everything dry.
When the coop or run gets wet...hold your nose.
Wet poop is the worst smell.

I highly recommend the deep litter method.

Steph you will be fine. If you start out with chicks, you will grow along with them - and see they aren't waiting to massacre you. I'm afraid of huge flocks of flying birds especially the Canadian Geese that just won't go home. I blame that on seeing the old movie "The Birds."

I am cracking up at your use of the word "massacre" because it really feels like that will happen! Goats too. I frickin hate goats. I got mobbed at a petting zoo as a child because I had a paper lunch bag. It probably scarred me in more ways than I realize! lol

I am looking forward to being their mama, though, and just sitting in by them and having them be my little babes. :)

Hello! Welcome to BYC!! :frow

Good luck on your new adventure! I bet you will fall in love, especially raising from chicks. Any idea what kinds you're getting?

Feel free to check out the links below for some interesting reading.

I plan to get 5-6 breeds, including RIR, a few different Wyandotte’s, and some pretty sex-linked. I’m hoping the guy at the feed mill can get them all. He told me he would try, even if they weren’t on the “list” from the hatchery.

Nice! I love all of my wyandottes. Save for my rooster who'll probably end up in the stew pot ;)

Welcome! Glad you decided to join :thumbsup I love my mixed flock, really enjoy hanging out with them. After some trial and error my last coop is easy to clean and poop boards are the best!!! Brace yourself for lots of dust from chicks in the brooder, they are so cute though, you won’t mind (initially). They go through the ugly awkward teenage stage but I love my hens, I think they are beautiful .... and sassy and spoiled:wee
