Hi I'm 8 months new and learning the ins and outs of the chicken world. I got my first two chicken from Craiglist for free and a friend gave me a silkie. Three months later, the silkie started laying eggs and the two speckled Sussex started crowing. I got rid of the mean one. I adopted another silkie rooster and successfully bred 7 baby mixed bantams.
I have ongoing chicken fever and in January I started buying pullets from a local feed bin in many separate visits. Next thing, I had bought 15 pullets, four turned to be roosters.
Six months later, they are all crowing at the same time. I'm trying to find out if I can trade the three roosters-1 Americauna named Cashew and two Barred Rocks named Obi-Wan and Darth Vader for ducks, quails or rabbits. They are organically fed and love kale and lettuce greens from our garden on top of the barley sprouts.
At first, I thought of turning them into barbecue or stew but after they stared at me every feeding time, I dropped the thought. I hope I could find them a new home where they can have the chance to carry out their intended purpose as roosters and won't end up getting eaten.
I'm sure there will be more incidental roosters coming out of the eggs I'm incubating from my flock and from the fertile eggs I bought from Cooportunity and Trader Joe's. The learning about chickens is continuously flowing.
