(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My family raised a backyard flock of chickens throughout my childhood, but now 10 years later, my husband and I have started our own flock as part of our homestead.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Right now we have one rooster and six hens of various ages and breeds.
(3) What breeds do you have?
We THINK our rooster is a Barred Rock. At least that's what he was sold to us as. Though we are beginning to suspect he may be a Cuckoo Maran or a Black Sex Link.
One hen is an Easter Egger that lays mint eggs with light brown speckles. Two other hens are some sort of black Cochin mix (??). Then we have a Cinnamon Queen, an ISA Brown, and what we were told is another Barred Rock. She just started laying but layes a darker Carmel colored egg with tiny chocolate specks, not quite full speckles.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love the eggs! And watching them interact. I love learning their little personalities.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
My husband and I are homesteaders so anything and everything that comes with that.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
It is just my husband and me for right now. Plus our chickens and bees. We plan on getting goats and ducks this year too. We currently live off grid in an rv in the woods.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I've used BYC for tips and advice for a while but I finally joined so I can get help identifying what breed our rooster is.
