Just adopted our girls today. Clockwise from top left: Charlotte (Black australorp), Samantha (Amaraucana), Carrie (buff Orpington) and Miranda (Rhode Island Red).

Question for experienced chicken moms/dads: I really want the girls to at least be semi-social. We’re planning to handle them at least a few times a day, but is there anything else we can do to make them more friendly? Tia!

I didn’t play much with my chicks. When they were 4 weeks I took them out the brooder and into my yard. The way I socialize with them now as adults and even my rooster, is by hand feeding. Before feeding give them a whistle or other sound that they will associated with being fed. This will help you get their attention and bring them too you. My rooster is very friendly, however if he feels that he can size up to you he will attack. So it’s best to keep them away from children. But hens are very docile.
