Hi there eveyone!

I'm new to BackYard Chickens. It's hard to tell you about my chickens because I don't have any! At this point, chickens are a wishful thought in my head (and not my husband's).

My husband's lack of enthusiasm is part of the reason I haven't moved forward. He's very supportive of my getting chickens if that's what I want, but I'm a bit fearful about making all the decisions -- what type of coop, where to put the coop, how to protect the chickens from all the wild critters we have, what kind of chickens, how many chickens.... you get the idea.

So, the reason I joined BYC is to get ideas and ask questions.

I am an empty-nester. Two grown daughters and one son-in-law. I am an elementary school counselor and love my job and my students.

! Great to have you here! You and I share the same profession!!!! Not sure if I've conversed with another elementary school counselor on BYC. A great place to start for the beginning chicken keeper is the Learning Center link below. It will tell you what you need to know to be a responsible poultry keeper! The Q & A forums are great as well. Also below is a nifty breeds chart for picking out the breeds you'd like as well as the Coops section so you can decide on a style that suits you!! Believe me, once you are properly set up, chicken keeping is a snap! Good luck in your journey!!
