I am totally OBSESSED with this fish! It totally freaked me out the first time I saw it in Walmart, but then I kinda, strangely, fell in love with it. No one else that I know (friends, family.....) has one, and he's going to go in my new 30 gal. hex. My dad was so nice to give me my new tank!

Isn't he neat?!?!

And this is my new tank, complete with 1 grammy, 2 lamp eye tetras, 2 minows, and 12 black skirt tetras.

There is a video coming soon!

You eye balling me, boy? You EYE BALLING me!? I love fish! It makes me want to get my aquarium running again.

I can't remember where it came from anymore. My brother and I used to say that at work. I'm curious about the breed as well.

Hey, how about a Plecostomus or Sucker Fish to keep that tank from getting algae buildup on the sides?

The tank is quite pretty. But it is rather overstocked, at least from what I can see (I could be misinterpreting it, because there are many pictures). Overstocking leads to reduced water quality, in addition to competition among fish (fighting). Edit: nevermind, saw that you had a list of what all is in the tank. While your little Dragon Goby is still small, the tank stock level is fine!

Give me a little bit to rack my brain for a bit. That new long/eelish fish is familiar, but I can't put my finger on the species, yet.

Most pl*costomus are actually pretty lousy about eating algae. They'd much rather eat actual food, and some can starve to death if forced to just eat algae.

Not to mention, the common pl*co gets very large (over a foot if taken care of properly). A smaller species, the bristlenose pl*co, which only tops out at six inches, isn't big on algae.

Otoclinus (also called otos or oto cats) are voracious algae eaters. They are little 'sucker fish' but they are also a schooling species. So they need to be kept in at least pairs or trios to be healthy and stress free.

I think the best way to reduce algae is to manage what makes algae overgrow. For instance, algae often blooms because of an excess of nutrients (from a tank that isn't cleaned enough, has too high a bioload, etc.). Too much light can make for algae growth, too. Adding algae reducing additives to the problem is kind of like temporary bandaid solution, so those don't really work.

Rex is a Gobioides broussonnetii, the Dragon Goby. Also known as a Violet Goby or Dragon Fish. I knew he looked familiar!

And he will need a larger tank than a 30 gallon hex...They grow to be very long (as you can imagine), and need room. But that doesn't have to happen ASAP, since he is still small. Big fish make for a high bioload, which is part of the issue, too.

I'd suggest feeding him at night. They're not very competitive with other fish. The other fish will scarf up the food before it gets down to him. At night, when most diurnal fish are inactive, he can get a bite to eat.

Hey, I have years of experience with tanks and have had several Ples...and they did a wonderful job on my 50 gallon, and 30 gallon tanks. Even reducing the light, adding additives to the water did nothing to help, compared to my sucker fish and I had a wonderful filtration system, changed the water/cleaned out the tank and gravel once a month. One did get to be larger, and he went to another tank.
