Hey, I have years of experience with tanks and have had several Ples...and they did a wonderful job on my 50 gallon, and 30 gallon tanks. Even reducing the light, adding additives to the water did nothing to help, compared to my sucker fish and I had a wonderful filtration system, changed the water/cleaned out the tank and gravel once a month. One did get to be larger, and he went to another tank.
It is so refreshing to hear from someone with fish experience! Sorry, I just have seen so many pl*ecos stuffed in tiny tanks. A full grown pl*co is an amazing critter! I shouldn't have made an assumption that you were one of those folks.
Yea, algae can be a real pain. You know the one critter I've found that I adore for algae control? It is the olive nerite snail. Unlike a lot of other snails, they don't breed out of control, since they need brackish or saltwater to breed. But they're fine in freshwater tanks, too, once acclimated. They absolutely decimate any scrap of algae they encounter! And are rather pretty, too. I almost found they did too good a job, as I needed to supplement mine with algae tablets, lest they starve! They stay rather small, too. No need to worry about a massive, pooing snail to add to the bioload of the tank! Olive nerites are hard to find, though...one big downside.
