Introduction: I've had chickens for about 30 years. Last November, a coyote got in my yard during free range time. I don't free range now.

I hear Orpingtons are good, but I only have Orpington hens. All my roosters have been either RIR or Plymouth Rock hybrids. Plymouths are a mixed bag in terms of temperament, and standard size RIR are both protective and promiscuous, good for breeding but not the best pets.
oh, and Silkies. depending on personality, they will either be your best friend, or stalk you for a quarter mile while you walk down your long country driveway to get the mail. that said, Gandalf the Silkie was the embodiment of the phrase "you shall not pass", and died protecting his flock from a fox.

Hello and Welcome to BYC. Glad that you joined us in this fun and poultry loving community. The friendliest rooster I've ever had is a Indio Gigante Aseel hybrid. He loves people and is very protective of his girls. A coyote would still over power him and any other breed of rooster that I know of.
