(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
No I'm not. Back in 2016 I had a small flock chickens. I had them for about a year but due to financial problems that happened due to my husband becoming disabled and unable to work we had to sell our home in WA and buy one for a lot less money in TX. We live about 50 miles south of Dallas. We sold or found homes for the 10 (approx) hens and 2 roosters ( which broke my heart because I really loved them all!) Now after 5 years I want to start a new flock!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I don't have any yet. We have a home on 2 acres which is not fenced on two sides so my husband, Art, is going to build a fence and a chicken coop ( he built 2 of them for our flock in WA). So we have to wait until that's done.
(3) What breeds do you have?
In WA I had a couple of Wyandotte hens and a Wyandotte rooster, a Barred Rock, a Rhode Island Red, a Polish, a Brahma, a Spitzhauben rooster, and a couple others that I can't remember what they were.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I found them to be very good at relieving stress, and calming my spirit. Most of them were pretty docile, friendly and huggable! When I went out to their enclosure to feed them or clean their coups, I would sit in my chair and some of them would just jump into my lap!
We got our first two in April or May 2016 and found homes for the last (the roosters) in September of 2017. I don't feel that I learned a whole lot from that experience, because I acquired all of them, over a period of several months, from my daughter (didn't pay for any of them!) for various reasons--it's complicated so I won't go into that here. I was a member of this group back in 2016-2017, and I'm happy to be back! I am most interested in learning more about the various breeds, which ones are the best egg layers, which ones make good pets, etc, and eventually I would like to raise a few chicks of my own. I will be asking lots of questions because I feel like I am a beginner!
I look forward to getting to know some of you! I will also post some photos of my Lake Stevens flock as I find time. Here's one . . . .
