(1) Are you new to ducks / when did you first get ducks?

Kinda/sorta, I remember liking ducks when I was younger. Now that I’m older and have grown up money, I wanted to have some pet therapy and take care of my own ducklings.

(2) How many ducks do you have right now?

Currently I have five fresh ducklings, all hatched by me. I had eleven, six did not make it :(, but the other five are all cute and interesting.

(3) What breeds do you have?

I have three mallards and two white layers.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard ducks?

This will be my first, but it’ll be seeing them grow up and grow up with me. It’s nice to see them getting accustomed to me and to see them imprint on me.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Other hobbies include hanging out with my buddies, playing computer games, and hanging out with my fiancé.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I have two other dogs dobermans, I’m trying to acclimate them to the ducklings, it will be a process though I’m sure. Any advice here?

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?

Just recently found out about it. Will be sticking around here for advice and whatnot. Thanks for the site guys.

Hi and welcome to BYC.

There are plenty threads on dogs and chickens / ducks - just use the BYC search function.

This is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3 I’d suggest including your location using the guide in that link. You can use this link to contact members in your area - Find your State's thread.

Best wishes

Great job hatching your own ducklings! What a rewarding experience. Thank you for sharing the pictures, they're adorable!

As far as the dogs go, what worked for me was teaching my both my dogs the "leave it" command. I gave very high value treats (like small pieces of hot dog or roasted chicken) as a reward every time they looked away or acted uninterested (stiff body staring intently at birds is bad... relaxed body and eyes, wiggling or sitting is good). The goal here is to take away the mystery of these tiny fascinating creatures and make other stuff seem much more appealing. I would start teaching with something inanimate though, like a ball or dry kibble, and keep dogs on a leash around the ducklings until they become reliable with the command. Hopefully before long, the ducks will just be part of the background.
