Southeast Michigan
Hello all! I'm Leslie, located in southeastern Michigan and am pretty much completely new to chickens! My best friend had some as pets growing up, but it's been about 20 years since then, haha! My fiance and I have been discussing options for quite a while and my daughter has developed a fascination for chickens so we feel it's time to dive into some chickens of our own. We are looking to get some very soon, the next couple of weeks. Looking for between 5 and 10. We aren't breed specific on them, though we do need them to be cold hardy given our climate here.

I came across BYC just by looking online for a place to come and get knowledgable information from many people who own chickens and know what they're doing! Rather than just jumping from site to site off Google.

Hi and welcome to BYC, Leslie

Here are some links to key resources:

Best wishes

Hello! Welcome to BYC!! :frow

Easter eggers, barred rocks, buckeyes and wyandottes are all great cold hardy birds!

Have you gotten your coop/run planned out yet?

If you have any interest, and have photos and plans/details of the coop you've built (or are going to build), there is a coop article contest going on right now! Here is a link:

Feel free to check out the links below for some interesting reading. Good luck on your adventures!

Thanks so much for the chicken suggestions!
We are in the planning stages of the coop, have been doing a lot of looking on websites for some pre-fab ones as my fiance works a lot and doesn't have the time to build one, though adding on is definitely something we'll probably do once weather finally breaks and he has more time in his schedule. Though I'm trying to be very picky and read every review on the coops because it seems quality isn't always there for some pre-fab. First timers, but wanna do it right! :)

Yes, unfortunately for the money you pay, you don't get much. Depending on budget, you may want to look into prefab sheds or having a contractor build you a shell that you can finish. But there are a lot of people that buy prefab coops and do just fine :)

Yes! I am definitely seeing that most of the pre-fabs have very mixed reviews! I am kind of tossed between two options, and one option has a very helpful review on it where the person strengthened it and added extra security, etc. I've been looking for sheds as well, but at the moment anything that costly is unfortunately out of our budget.
