Introduction

Hello all,

I am excited to be here. A friend of mine shared this site to get me started on all my chicken needs. I currently have 4 chicks that are 5 weeks old. I have been able to use other forms to get me to this point. I have two Dominque's and two Rhode Island Reds. I enjoy being in my yard and starting our little farm, but I work full time as a fire fighter. I am sure I will have many questions, but currently I have one. My chicks are on starter feed right now. At what point can I start giving them human food/food scraps? Thanks in advanced for all of your help and I will continue to read and research.

Hi and welcome to BYC and congrats on your new hobby. I never fed my birds scraps, but i would suggest waiting until your chicks are older and consume / have access to grit. I’m sure others will offer their advice and the links below will contain additional information.

Welcome Nice to have you here! If you provide chick grit you can give other food. I would limit treats to no more than about 10% of their daily intake

They will be out in the coop at the end of this week. It is about 70 degrees during the day and 60 at night so with the heat lamp on they will be in their coop.
