1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am not new to chickens I am new to having my own flock though. my parents got a few when I was young but only had them for a year. When I was 19, my boss (Exotic parrot rehabilitation and rescue) called me and told me that her chicken eggs had hatched, they were half bantam and half another breed which was unknown. We took one baby home, she lived in my husband and I’s house until my parents dogs got her before I could get them away
she had just laid her first egg. We named her Hibachi, she cuddled on the couch with us every evening, rode on my horses back around the yard, went for walks by my side, terrorized our pit bull (he has a white fleck on the top of his tail and she loved to peck at it) and was just the biggest joy I could have ever imagined! I saved a couple of her feathers, my husband still can’t look back at pictures of her without becoming upset.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? I have 4 chickens right now all rescues, One is with our neighbors flock, she is a full bantam hen, her flock was attacked by a fox and she was the only survivor. She just hatched her first baby with the neighbors Americana rooster (I can’t remember how to spell it off of the top of my head I apologize). On my property I have one solid black rooster who was labeled at violent and they would saw off the tip of his beak regularly. He lets me kiss all over him, open his beak, pet his crown, carry him. He doesn’t like others though. I have 2 of the giant meat hens they were bought at tsc, I was told they would all die by 12 weeks, my niece found someone selling them at her football game and had her dad buy them so she could bring them to me to save. They are just over 6 months I’m hoping they will breed with Ronnie the rooster so we can produce some babies but no luck so far. Lastly I have 9 pekin ducks, one lives in my house as she had what I think was botulism poisoning and it has been a month she or he can finally walk again!
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Watching their personalities and little different quirks! I absolutely love them all but my favorite thing is sitting outside with them and sharing my snacks, listening to their little paddled feet flop around. The duck in my house has now decided I’m a friend and is extremely talkative and when it he sees or hears something he likes he starts quacking quietly and flapping his wings all over!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I train horses, milk goats and sell the milk, sell eggs we get over 5 dozen a day at my neighbors, breed and sell rabbits, I am a full time stay at home mom, I do some Paracord work, and I adore outdoor activities! We also rescue any animal when we have the chance, no matter what species it is, this spring we brought in baby cat who was just too sick to make it, a baby squirrel and nest of baby blue jays, the parents were killed by my parents cat, after a couple days of them screaming due to being hungry we took them inside.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have a husband and an 18 month old baby girl, I am 22 and working on creating a self sustaining property. We haven’t bought vegetables, eggs or any dairy products from the store in close to six months now! I care for my parents as they are becoming older, my husbands mom will also be joining us within the next 2-3 years to retire and settle down. His family is from Honduras so we
are all bilingual, once I finish mastering Spanish we intend to learn sign language and then build more from there.
Together own 2 horses, 2 dogs, 2 parrots, 9 ducks, 4 chickens, and 2 sugar gliders. We are going to be purchasing our own Rabbits and a milking goat next year, it will stay at my neighbors property so it won’t be alone
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Every time I have needed advice for my flock your website always pops up! And it always gives the most helpful tips from experienced people! Especially being newer to having my very own flock, I’m used to parrots and other exotics but ducks a chickens I had to relearn!
