Hi, my name is Taegan, im fairly new to all this! I've been Incubating and hatching since around October last year. I'm already a hatch'a'holic!🤷‍♀️😂 I'm still learning and enjoying the whole process.
I've already had to make shoes and a brace for newly hatched chicks, which I never in my life thought I would ever do! 😅
Today I have had a chick hatch with what I believe to be leg deformity 🥺 it's supposed to be a pure silkie, which is what I bought the eggs as from the seller. This one particular egg already had growth & development when I got it home and candled prior to setting in my bator. I didn't think it would make it to hatch day, but here we are on day 15 and it's hatched!! Which at first I thought was great! Now I'm not so sure, after inspecting the little one it has some issues with it's legs, one leg looks almost like it's completely twisted and is missing one if it's main toes.. it's other leg I'm not sure it had the 5th toe.. I'm not sure this little one is going to be compatible with life.. and I feel super bad for it...if anyone on her can help me or give me any advice, I'd be truly appreciative. I can post pics upon request but thought I'd wait to see if I get any replies first. (That's if I can even figure out how/where to check for that!) 😬😅 Thank you for letting me join! I'm hoping to learn a lot here and get some great advice from some experts! 😉

Hello, Taegan, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I'm so sorry about the chick. If it were mine, I would euthanize. I don't believe it will have a quality life on those legs. And that is the the outward deformity you can see. You don't know what other defects it hatched with. I'm sorry. :hugs
If you go that route, here are two articles you can read:

Ah ok I thought the silkie breed were supposed to have 5 toes! 🤷‍♀️ I will see if I can work out how to ad a picture, just give me a moment.
:welcome Taegz,
And yes 5 toes is standard for silkies.
Bad deformations probably lead to death or a hard live. Sorry I can’t give you any advice to make you happy.

Next time I wouldn’t buy eggs in the process of hatching. Imo its better to start with fresh fertilised eggs.

Thank you, these were supposed to be freshly collected eggs, but one of of 16 had already had growth. 🤦‍♀️
