Hi everyone! I’ve been keeping chickens for a few years now, and while I’m not brand new, I still feel like I’m always learning something. At the moment I have around 30 birds in total, including a five roosters. My flock is a fun mix of Rhode Island Reds, Araucanas, Black Orpingtons, Light Brahmas, Pekin Bantams, and a White Leghorns.

My favourite part of raising chickens is just how calming and entertaining they are. I love watching their little routines, their dramas, and the way each chicken has such different personalities. They’re a really grounding part of my day and I love to go out and sit with them.

Outside of chickens, life is pretty full, I’m into farming, creative projects, and keeping things running smoothly at home. I live in New Zealand with my husband and our kids, and we also run a dairy farm, so there’s always something feathered, furry, or small running around here.

I found BYC after searching for clear advice over the years. Whenever I’ve googled anything chicken-related, this community always pops up with helpful answers, so I finally decided to join. Looking forward to learning more and chatting with everyone!

Welcome, welcome!

I think it's wise to know that NONE of us ever know all there is to know about chickens (or So Many Other Things!) and to want to keep learning. But, as a group the members of BYC are incredibly knowledgeable and enjoy helping one another.

Your life sounds busy; isn't it great that chickens help you relax and regroup!

Five roosters, huh? Do they live with the hens or in a bachelor coop? I've only had one nice rooster (meaning he didn't overbreed the girls or attack me). The rest were rehomed to a friend's farm to live out their lives.

Welcome to BYC!
