Introduction

We have two 3 week easter egger pullets and 3 other few day old chicks to add to our current small flock of Orpingtons. All the chicks and older chickens are pullets by the way - its still too cold outside for any of the chicks to go out for the night - but when it is time, how should I introduce them? About a week ago I had the easter eggers out with a few of the hens and the older one attempted to attack the babies. How can I ensure the babies will be safe? How big should they be before I try to reintroduce them again? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

1. It would probably be best to allow them to see each other first through a fence. After they've gotten used to each other, it would be best to let them all go out and free range. It's easier for them to get used to each other when they have more space. One suggestion is to watch them outside for a while, and whenever one of them begins to bully another, shake a tin can with pennies in it and duct tape over the top. They don't like the noise and will stop what they're doing to see what it is. In my experience, it has made transitioning two flocks together a lot easier.

2. I would suggest free ranging them so the smaller birds are able to escape if they are bullied. There are also many more distractions and food while free ranging, which will make it much easier.

3. I would wait at least a week or two, but it would be even better if you waited until the chicks were around the size of the older chickens. That way, they'll stand a better chance if they begin to pick on them.
