Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

I dont know if I would say dedicated. It was a long winter, and I often get fixated on things during the long winter. Time will tell as to my dedication. Theres 22 birds and my today guess is 8 roos, exactly what I hoped, but it could change. Just 4 weeks and I am not great at sexing. Gotta start somewhere.
We are fairly new to Iowas and we have gotten pretty accurate determining sex when they are about 2 weeks old. The cockerels develop a comb lots faster in Iowas and sometimes the tail feathers are a clue in 2 week olds with long tail feathers very early are usually pullets :) Definitely not a guarantee, but a good starting point.

Sold my cockerel today. He's going to be supervising 4 hens while free-ranging. Not a bad gig for him.

I'm impressed that you sold him. I usually have to give away the males, and then deliver them.
well, I had him listed on craigslist for five bucks, and I met the buyer in Chelsea, about 25 minutes away. Guy who bought him sounds like he's new to chickens, and really just wanted a good rooster to supervise his 4 hens without also wanting to take out his grandkids as well.

Thanks! You never know how people like it until they say so. There was a lot of content this time so I was excited to get it all out to everyone.

My new Iowa hen. A reject from Candy and Fivewire's flock as she's not really a standard Iowa look, but I'm really looking more for layers who do well with some limited free-ranging. I still think she's pretty, even if she tried to take a hunk out of my forearm today.

Oh no, what a bad girl! :) She wasn't handled much as a baby. However, most Iowa girls will not mind being around people, but picking them up can be a challenge no matter what. She is pretty, too much white for our program though. I hope you enjoy!

I kinda figured that. Had her in my lap today, feeding her some mealworms. She seems to be picking that up pretty quick. No really attack pecks today.
