Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

Hello Everyone. I don't usually do things like this, however, I thought I'd give you all first chance to check it out before I share on the buy section or Craig's List.

I have a Dickey Incubator and Hatcher for sale. I purchased these just shortly before he quit making them. As anyone who already has one of these, they are second to none. I have never been able to use them to their full capacity so I've decided to move them on. If you're interested in either of them, send me a pm and I'll share what I'm asking for them.

Here is the incubator. It does not have the self turning mechanism, but the trays are there so if you'd want that you'd just have to get the motor that operates it. It also has a meter that tracks the temp and humidity (operated with a AAA battery). Capacity 300 large chicken eggs, 350+/- medium eggs, 450+/- small eggs.

And here is the Hatcher. The cool thing about the hatcher it is comes with lids so that the chicks can't jump out. I've also make some dividers out of hard wire cloth that fit inside the trays so that you can segregate eggs by breeding pen, color, shape, etc. Capacity 500 large eggs, 550+/- medium eggs, don't know how many small eggs, but you get the idea....a lot. :)

Bummer! I just bought a Sportsman a few months ago. I doubt you will have trouble finding a new home for them.

It worked. Hatched 11 out of 16 in the first try. 2 smokies 2 birchen 1 or 2 charchoal and the rest silver. I knew it was holding temp tighter than 98.5 and 100 for a week but I am still amazed it worked. That is a hot plate in there with a 8 inch fan with 3 one inch holes behind the fan. I actually moved the hot plate to the far end of the bator, and with a 12 hour water pan on top of the hot plate it could reach 60% humidity. It had to be a smaller water pan that didn't entirely cover the burner, and I had to get the resistence on the hot plate just right. Aluminum oxide paint kept the wood from absorbing all the moisture. That is quarter inch plexiglass. And this.

There is a review for this thermostat on the BYC site, and I should have included the link right here. It is the real deal, makes everything easy.

I think I can get 48 eggs in it. Just using LG turners and built it to fit 2 of them, but the hatching tray will limit how many eggs. Just think its cool that I could get it to work.

I am not trying to hijack a thread. Just wondering how serious a side sprig is on a rooster comb. This guy seems to be my largest cockrel with a nice body shape, leg color.

The side sprig is toward the back of the comb. Its not a great pic, but I can see it. I am still promising you a camera instead of my phone.

I am not planning to cull until mid to late sept, and I do have other options. He is the biggest of my candidates, and I don't plan to show. Just wondered how hard this would be to bread out of future generations.

We have noticed these "carnation" combs in some of our third generation cockerels. We have a small flock so not sure if it's linked to the girls or the boys. Only one viable cockerel, nine hens. Our most recent hatch of three under a broody hen produced one silver which I was hoping is a boy, too early to tell. We have one huge smokey boy and a female birchen out of those. However, our third gen boys had a lot of AR and more than half of those had carnation combs (sprigs)
