Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

jakob -
i got my eggs from you and it is my 1st try at incubating
12 eggs you packed perfectly all in perfect condition on arrival
so i went and bought an incubater and put the eggs in on april 1st
they were a little smaller than i expected but, i didnt really know what to expect
im giddy with antisipation and a little worried because of a lack of experiance
we can only have 3 hens in des moines but we are having 6 birds
3 for us "3 for the next door neighbor"
i just built a coop 4 ft x 8 ft with a 800 sq ft run
i think that wil be plenty of space for 6 birds
i want to show them at the state fair but i dont know how that all works.........yet
im going to waverly in the morning i hope to see an iowa blue there
since i havnt seen one out of the shell !!!!
thanks schroeder

Schroeder,

I'll be in Waverly too, and also breed them. I just set eggs last night. This will be my first batch of Iowa Blue's.

We'll have a black dodge with a blue gooseneck by the ball diamond. We're County Line Hatchery. I'll also be sitting with Mr&MrsChicken here on BYC in the building with chicks. My cell # is three19 three50 six820

Jake,

I am located near Clinton, IA but on the Illinois side. I'm about 45 minutes from the Quad Cities and about 2 1/2 hours from Chicago.

If anyone else has pics of their Iowa Blues please send them to the [email protected] email address. I am going to try and create an album with as many samples of the breed as possible.

Jake

i went to a sale today no iowa blue chicks or chickens but i did see someone elses iowa blue eggs in waverly
your eggs were larger and a little darker than these
thanks again schroeder

Jakob you're about 8 hrs from me, plus or minus, probably more like 9, if I ever came out to swap birds, we'll see, its doable.

I like what you are doing on the data, it needs to be, the more info the better, I am still trying to find something on the origins but other then the same lame tale nada.

That needs to be also.

Shroeder,

Trish here. Glad to meet you at the Waverly Swap. Kari brought me some hatching eggs from her Iowa Blues. What you saw, Shroeder, were pullet eggs, so they would be smaller. Give those hens a few more months of laying, and there will be a big difference.

I have some Black Tailed Buff Marans that lay bigger eggs than my Pekin ducks. The eggs won't fit into any of the turner trays for our big incubators. But those are from 2 year old hens. They weren't like that last year.
