Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

Yes, my IA Blues have only been laying a couple months so their eggs are pretty small yet. I currently have 2 breeding roosters in my flock and neither one is really what I would like to see, but there just aren't enough of them to be too picky right now.

This one has too much white, but I am hoping he'll improve the quality of the silver and pattern on the hens. He also does not have the brassy color on his saddle and hackle that the others have.

Here is a sample of my flock - not a very good picture for color but you can see the nice full body and upright tails that I would want to see. The rooster on the far right is the other flock sire I kept. The one I traded to Trish looks very much like him. Good size and pattern, but they have that mossy stain on their saddle and hackle feathers. The runt on the far left is a mystery

I'll be setting a bunch after Easter, so we'll see. I'm also curious to see how Hurley's and FlashPointFarm's hatches turn out

Wow, this thread took off. I have 1 roo and 3 hens. They are pretty small as everyone else says, but I have noticed them grow a bit more over the past month. Only 1 has good lacing, or at least so you can actually tell it has lacing, you can barely tell on the other two. I will have to get pics of them today/tomorrow. The roo does seem to have pretty good lacing to me, so it should improve the lacing on the hens, hopefully. And 1 or 2 eggs from them have hatched today, that are pure Iowa blue and not mixed with the other birds they are with..we have 2 Iowa blue mixes that hatched. We have 3 dozen eggs collected up. I can't really tell the eggs apart so I just grab small ones and hope they are from the Iowa blues lol...also some are buttercup eggs.

My Iowa Blue eggs are incubating happily. Of the 32, I have 21 developing which is pretty good considering it looks like the PO wasn't very easy on them. Couple ruptured air cells, a couple scrambleds. I'm tickled. Week and a half to go, woot! Should be receiving some chicks from Sandhill right about that same time, hopefully. Have 10 or so coming from them along with some miscellaneous other breeds for the laying pen (I like my colorful egg basket.

Great photos and discussion! Can't wait to see what the next couple years bring, but so tickled to see interest in the breed growing.

I'm going to start collecting eggs now for my Post Easter IA Blue hatch. I wonder how many I can cram in my Genesis1588? They are small eggs after all
