Iowa Blues Chicken Club (IBCC) - Breed Standard Discussion / Club Discussion

Hey everybody. I took my cock bird to the EIPA show this weekend. The problem is that I entered a non standard breed. My card simply showed a :)

I found out that our 5 years of showing doesn't start until we propose a Standard to the APA. I'd personally like to see one presented by the next show season.

Another thought is officers for the club. I think that would make usore official. The officers could appoint a Standard Committee to work on the Standard and then club members could review it and vote on it.

Comments?

Disclaimer: some of these ideas were brought up by Hurley but I also have been thinking about them for several months.

I agree, I am working on compiling a list of IBCC membership. I just renewed the domain and came across a handful of emails that for some reason didn't get pushed on to my email box to review, so I've corrected that situation and will be responding to those emails as best I can.

I am in favor of electing officials, if for nothing else, than to make us more legit and give us some credibility. Selecting a committee of 3-4 people seems to be the best number for getting a project accomplished in a reasonable amount of time.

Working on that list, will post more in a bit...

Looks like about 33 people on the contact list that listed that we can email them, 3 that said no emails.

I can send out an email to the membership if we wish to hold volunteering for positions and elections to get things going.

I suppose in the future it'll need to get more official with dues, etc., but not sure which is supposed to come first, the chicken or the egg (treasurer and elected officials vs. membership dues which keeps random people from signing up with 50 email addys and diluting voting,etc.).

What do we think, send out an email calling for people to nominate for positions (themselves or other person, who would have to accept) by such-and-such a date, compile, and hold a vote on such-and-such a date (or date range). Once we have officers, they can assign a committee from interested parties. This would get the standard worked over by a few people, then it can be offered up to the membership for a vote to accept or reject for reworking with suggestions. I would think we could get this done by spring for 2013 showing year.

I need to look up the what's involved with submitting to the SOP, have the book - will look it up.

Came across an email from the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, asking about us. I have responded with some basic information and that the club is in its formative stage with hopes to have a standard by this spring and to email us with any questions.

Also have caught up on the questions submitted to the IowaBlueChickenClub.com's email. Found out it wasn't fowarding as it should, so had several inquiries to respond to.

Great. I'd say e-mail the 33 members, have nominations open until 01 December 2012n acceptance by 03 December 2012 then e-mail ballots out on 05 December 2012 and due on 07 December 2012 by 23:59 Iowa Blue time (CST). Just my opinion.

As for dues, membership of the American Sussex Association went from over 100 to less than 20 after dues were added and nothing still gets done. Maybe we could offer listing farm pages for a small fee.

Sounds good. We'll hold off on dues, maybe just offer ads on a breeder list or something that could pay for the website at some point. I just renewed the domain for 2 more years, so we're set there for a while.

So, a timeline:

Dec. 1st - Have nominations in for the officers, nominees will be emailed to ask them for acceptance of the nomination:

President
Vice President
Secretary
Standards Committee (submit for consideration for selection by the elected officials, 1 page resume/letter/essay accepted for officials to consider for making their selections)

Dec. 3rd - Acceptance must be received

Dec. 5th - Ballots will be emailed out to the membership for election of the 3 offices

Dec. 7th - Ballots much be returned and will be tallied

Dec. 8th - Membership will be emailed with the list of 2013 officers for the Iowa Blue Chicken Club, Officers will receive an email of Standards Committee applicants and their information (if supplied)

Dec. 15th - Standards Committee will be announced - expected to be a group of 3+ people who will review the current preposed standard and revise to a form expected to be acceptable for submitting to the Standards of Perfection to allow 2013 to be the first year of the five required for the breed to show prior to acceptance into the standards.

All deadlines are by 23:59 CST ("Iowa Blue Time")

I would be happy to handle the emailing/compiling if no one has any objection. I promise not to stuff the ballot box. ;) If anyone has any objection or would prefer to do the electronic paper work, just say the word. :D

I just wrote a post but my phone closed the browser.

If you need help, let me know.

I'd suggest the position of Secretary/Treasurer if we will offer ads/farm listing.

I'd also like to see a goal for when the Standard is hoped to be completed. This will allow individuals to determine if they will have time to work on it and keep them chugging along.

Noted, do we want a single person secretary/treasurer or two individuals?

As for a deadline, when's the first show? I would say we need it voted and submitted by a month prior.

Edited to add: Looks like June for a good time to begin showing, so would say we should have our standard submitted by no later than May 1st, which means April 15th for a final vote by the membership, giving a month leeway for revisions if the membership doesn't approve would make it March 15th.

If we want to leave time for potential for revision and revote, I would propose that the Committee should be prepared to have the standard proposed revisions ready by March 1st. That would give the committee 2 months following the holidays.

The first show I know of is early May in our area. There are some working on IB in Ca and Fl. Not sure when their shows start. We may want to check with Walt Leonard (Fowlman01) on any deadlines. He is the chair of the Standards Committee for APA.

I think one position for now (Sec/Treasurer) is fine. The ASA also has advisors. If we have enough interest, that may be something we'd want to do or Regional Directors but I may be putting the cart in front of the horse.

Off to finish chores.

In regards to recognition of new breeds to the SOP, the following is directly from the SOP for reference, copied with correction of a couple typos.
