In breeds with Silver Penciled varieties, they are listed as follows:

SILVER PENCILED [BREED]

Disqualifications

[Any breed specific DQs listed]
(See General Disqualifications and Cutting for Defects.)

COLOR -- MALE AND FEMALE

COMB, FACE, WATTLES AND EAR-LOBES: Bright Red
BEAK: (breed specific, ex: "Dusky yellow, shading to yellow at point.")
SHANKS AND TOES: (breed specific, ex: "Dusky yellow, yellow preferred.")
PLUMAGE: See description of Silver Penciled Plumage Color, page 35.

For birchens I found two places where the color was written out in the breed (Modern Game and Cochins), both were identical other than color listings for face/beak/legs. Plumage descriptions were the same. In another place I found they referred back to a previous Birchen description, but the page number was off, listing 172 (unrelated photo page) instead of presumably 178 which showed the Modern Game breed listing.

I would think we may not need to write out the coloration other than listing the face/comb/leg colors if we plan to breed to the standardized listing for the two colors.

Do we know anybody that has bred them for 5 years? Also, Kari and I were talking today about the Birchen variety. I thought the Birchen was different from other varieties in that it has the silver lacing as well. I know we are both working towards it.

Did I need to do something different with my cock bird for the show so I got something besides a :) on the card? I bet that didn't happen with Marans.

On these points:

  • a. A petition for recognition of any breed or variety of any domestic or foreign breed must be sent to the Secretary giving the history of its origin, breeding background, and with facts of educational nature, all of which shall be preserved in the records of the Association. Included shall be the proposed name of the breed or variety with a standard for shape, color and weight, written in the same style and format as the Standard of Perfection and included with the petition, with copyright assigned to the American Poultry Association, inc.

A petition can be generated, proposed name Iowa Blue, the standard we are working on and it is in the style of the SOP.

  • b. Affidavits shall be included from not less than five breeders stating they have bred the breed or variety for not less than five years and that it produces not less than 50% of all specimens reasonably true to type, color, size and comb.

We will have this within 3 years, if not before. I am not sure from the wording if this petition and these affidavits must be in place BEFORE we start showing them to count towards the following requirements.

  • c. Certificates showing two or more specimens have been exhibited in each class of cocks, hens, cockerels and pullets in each of the preceding two years at a show officiated by a licensed A.P.A. judge. The Secretary shall contact the judge for his or her confidential opinion of the quality and uniformity.

We'll have to work together to select shows to get these numbers present.

  • d. A deposit of the sum sufficient to defray the actual cost of placing the text in the Standard shall be received with the petition, which amount shall be returned in full in case of rejection.

Will need to find out this cost, then work towards raising it, depending on what it is.

  • e. The petition will then be referred to the Committee on Standards who shall name a qualifying meet at a designated prominent show to be judged by a licensed A.P.A. judge. Such qualifying meet shall consist of not less than fifty (50) specimens exhibited by at least five exhibitors in all classes of cock, hen, cockerel, and pullet.

Shouldn't be a problem by then... :)

  • f. When satisfied that the breed or variety has met all requirements, the committee may recommend its acceptance, subject to final approval by the Board of Directors, upon which it becomes a recognized breed or variety.

The future goal.

  • g. No petition for subdivision of a Standard variety shall be entertained by the Committee on Standards except in Turkeys.

I don't know what this means and don't think it applies to us depending on how we wish to petition for acceptance. I.e. I believe the SOP would consider the two colors to be separate breeds, so would we have to meet these requirements for both color varieties, I'm assuming? If so, do we want to just focus on one variant to start with or try to raise the numbers to get them both approved? I've mostly got birchens in the adult birds, though it looks like I may have a few silver penciled in the young that I'm raising up. Storey's book shows silver penciled Iowa Blues as their examples, for what that's worth.

This is what I don't understand about them telling you that a standard has to be submitted to APA before you could show your bird. I was under the understanding that you had to meet all the above points before you COULD submit the standard to them. Yet, clearly above you have to be showing before submitting the standard/petition for acceptance. Do they need a preliminary standard submitted before they start counting?

I can think of 3 breeders that have had Iowa Blue for 5 years: Jake Scroggins, Steve Dingman, and Sandhill Preservation. I'm not sure if Jake's brother breeds them.

You and Kari are entering your 3rd year soon. My third year begins in July.

There is somebody in a Southern State that has had them for some time.

As for the subdivision, could that be Bronze and Broad Breasted Bronze?

OK guys, I stayed up and tried to whip the website into order.

Nomination form for elections for IBCC officers is up and running and we have the first few nominations in. An email has been sent to the membership listing dates/deadlines and to remind everyone that we exist. ;) If you did not receive an email and feel you should have, please email me at Webmaster _ @ _ iowabluechickenclub.com (remove the dashes).

This form is for the following:
President
Vice President
Secretary/Treasurer
To apply to sit on the standards committee, which will be limited to a workable number of people (no less than 3) to be able to get the standard finalized by spring

If you are nominated by someone else, you will be contacted via email by Dec. 2nd to ask for your acceptance of the nomination. Acceptance is due in by Dec. 3rd. I will be emailing everyone with a notification that your nominations have been received. I have had some problems with a couple people's emails bouncing back saying their inbox is full, so please check your inbox or you may not receive the emails! :)

I posted a blog on the site to act as a running record of the club happenings, since we are internet-based.

I am compiling a list of people who have applied for the standards committee along with any information they provide to "please their case" for the officers to review in making their selections.

The website's domain has been renewed for 2 more years and the webmaster email is now fully functional and appears to be working properly, so please do let me know if anyone notes any bugs or issues.

Jim, perhaps it was because there was no competition.

You guys better get to raising some chicks! We'll have to plan our show participation jointly to meet these requirements.

I talked to Phil Shank, Supt (I think) of the EIPA show. He said they would like to work with us. He mentioned if our qualifying meet were there, they would include us in their Poultry Press ad and if we sponsored prizes we'd be advertized in the catalog.

Nice! It's a good location, I'll make the drive for it. We just need to figure out if we have to have a standard in or not to begin having shows count for us.

I hope to have plenty of birds for next year to show. If we work together we should be able to meet the requirements.
