Ughhh!!!! I am finally getting three eggs a day which is awesome! But right before they started laying someone sent me an article on salmonella and back yard chickens....now I'm scared to actually eat the eggs! Help! The article said you can't tell if a chicken has salmonella or not. It even said that scrambled eggs could still make you sick. Could someone help me? My husband is a bit frustrated after all the time/money we put into these chickens!!!!

There could be and probably is salmonella on most produce bought in grocery stores, still eat it, I wouldn't worry about things you have no proof over, the only time I ever got sick eating was from eating out, now that I don't do too often anymore. Make sure you cook your egg, no runny yolks, you will be fine, if you're that worried get rid of your chickens and be at the mercy of the large egg producers, me, I'll take my chances with my own eggs.

I would MUCH rather eat eggs from my own birds, ones I know what they are eating and how they are housed. In the past 15 years I have never gotten sick from my hens' eggs and I do tend to prefer under done yolks.

I agree, I'd rather eat eggs from my own chickens knowing where/how they are raised and how the eggs were handled.

I've only had food poisoning once, it was after eating out.

I have never gotten sick from eating fresh eggs. I like over easy eggs also. I think your more likely to get food poisoning from commercialy produced eggs those poor chickens.

Not likely.
'Irrational' is the key word here.
I don't even wash or refrigerate my eggs(unless they're really poopy) and often eat them sunny side up.

Eat and Enjoy!!!...and block that persons email.

I know it's an irrational fear, but I actually feel better about eating fresh eggs.i know what my girls eat, and i know that they get lots of exercise and fresh air. Not to forget that Lord only knows what some of those poor "factory " chickens are getting in the way of extra medications to get bigger or more eggs. I feel like I'm doing the chickendom a favor by having happy chickies that give me happy eggs.

You have a better chance of getting sick from a sunny side up egg at a restaurant, than an egg straight out of your coop. I know that it can seem scary when considering the possibility of your eggs having salmonella, but you have to think that every time you ate grocery store eggs that have gone halfway across the country you did not think twice. Plus, eggs from your chickens are from the coop to the kitchen, which is a wee bit closer.

So salmonella is a bacterial infection. Afaik all chickens have salmonella bacteria. That's why you gotta wash your hands after handling your birds or handling anything that comes in contact with their feces. The only way to get salmonella poisoning (from your own chickens, assuming you keep themin clean humane conditions) is to ingest improperly prepared food that's been contaminated or to put your hands or something else that's been in contact with the chickens into your mouth.

Iirc the egg has a bacterial shield so there's no salmonella inside the shell. If you're worried, try to limit contact with the whites/yolk and the outside of the shell and fully cook the egg. Wash your hands after handling the eggshells to help prevent contaminating other foods. Edit: alcohol-based hand sanitizer also works.

Hope that helped. Here's a useful link: http://www.mypetchicken.com/backyar...lla-a-concern-with-backyard-chickens-H19.aspx

salmonella only effects people who are really weak with other factors going on. i have never worried about it. its just more fear porn. they say that about reptiles too. i spent my childhood playing with and catching frogs turtles snakes, never had any issues. we also eat our eggs raw in a smoothie. i like what aart said, block their emails!

humans are becoming more crazy every day. so many are being taught to fear nature and what is natural. when the reasons humans are ill is because of the all the un natural they bring into this world.

hand sanitizers are terrible and kill off all the beneficial bacteria on your skin. they are causing lots of problems for people and are not safe. many studies and info coming out about that. my brother is obsessed with those things and his family is sick all the time.

keeping our immune systems strong by taking care of our bodies, minds, spirits and emotions is far better than any quackery modern medicine put out there. for them, its all about profits.
