Irresponsible dog owners...gotta rant!

I think both points are correct. Its irresponsible of the neighbors to let their dogs run free and the dogs should disappear. No more warnings, no more discussion, just one day be made to disappear.

BUT, to leave a dog in heat unsupervised in a yard is sort of asking for trouble and any responsible breeder will tell you that. Too many chances for an unwanted breeding to happen. In this case, its the responsibility of both parties to make sure the dogs cannot get together.

Some people that posted, obviously didn't see where I said that I keep the dog IN MY HOUSE when she is not supervised. I'm not really worried about her getting pregnant - I'm doing MY JOB to see that it doesn't happen. You can have every wooden fence in the world, and a dog that wants in or out is going to find a way. Same with a kennel...great idea, but not foolproof. If this dog going to be bred - the darn males are going to have to open the door to the house and the laundry room - or try to breed her when she is on a leash or in front of me in the yard. The underground fence gives my dogs about 2 acres (out of 50) to run in that is large enough to give them space, and small enough to be able to keep an eye on them. I know that it isn't going to keep other dogs out of my yard, but it keeps mine in. I think I'm being pretty responsible, but obvoiusly there are some people that don't. Maybe I am wrong, but right now, I expect to be able to walk my dog in my yard on a leash without either of us getting molested by a neighbor's dog! It ticks me off that people think that just because a female dog is in heat - it's like a free ticket to condone their dogs' roaming.

I haven't had a female on my property that has come in heat for a year, up until 2 weeks ago. My older lab was spayed last spring, and the 'puppy' hadn't come into her first cycle yet. Stray dogs have been through here regardless - besides, being in heat wasn't the main point anyway. It's drawing dogs to my farm where these dogs are a potential threat to my other animals. I was simply ranting about irresponsible dog owners and if/what I was going to do about it.

The SSS method is looking better and better!

I think the other BYCers gave the same answers I would about your birds. I grew up in showdog kennel family. When a female dog would come into heat, Mom would put a pair of mens tighty whitey underwear on her so "accidents" couldn't happen. They'd have to come off so she could use the bathroom but worked quite well with a small hole cut out for the tail. Also helped if she was "staining".

I wonder if it would make sense for you to install one of those movement activated lights? I guy a knew had goats attacked (while in their fenced pen) by dogs that had dug under the fence that ran around the whole property. These dogs broke through two fences. They injured one that was pregnent, and killed one. When the dogs came back another night to get the final goat, the lights turned on and he shot the dogs. I really get sad when an animal has to be killed like that, but the owner was doing nothing, and it would never have stopped. They had children which could have been attacked if nothing was done.

I know you said the labs aren't aggressive to you, but still. Let us know when you decide what action to take, because I'm doubting you're one to sit back and do nothing.

Use a paintball gun and mark em lol. I ahd my first incounter with a paintball gun yesterday and now have gigantic welps all over. I'm pretty sure after getting hit by that they will think about staying away for a long time. Or they might just be dumb enough to do it again as I will be lol.

I would be furious if I were you to.

You know, I had a similar situation back in January. My dog came into heat and I watched her like a hawk. The next door neighbors intact male dog, who normally never comes over to our side of the fence, decided to investigate. He is a chicken killer and he almost got one of my hens before I chased him off. Now the neighbor down the road also has an intact male that never bothers us or comes to the house unless he is with the neighbor. He was in our yard, dragging myh sons old bike around by the tire. He got in our garage and chewed up the shop vac and ripped the vinyl seats on the dirt bikes. I asked them if they could keep him contained for a few more days until she goes out of heat. The owners of that dog are a sweet older couple that we get along with really fantastically. He just recovered from leukemia so we never thought about having them pay for damages. I totally agree it is the male dog owners responsibility to keep their dog in their own yard, female in heat or not. I did my part and kept my female in the house. If you have repeatedly asked the owners to keep their dogs contained and they haven't, then you have the right to protect what is yours. I would just playh dumb if they come around asking questions when their animal doesn't come home after a few days. I would do the same thing if I had problems with the dogs other than when my dog is in heat.

Heh, this is why I made sure my first conformation dog was male...I didn't want to deal with a female in heat in our busy urban neighborhood.

Kudos to you guys who have the patience to put up with a bit** in heat!

The Female is contained and supervised, The Original poster has every right to keep her female intact.
She also has the right for us to respect that.
Other peoples dogs and cats should not be allowed to roam free , after all thats what Leash Laws are supposed to be for.

I agree. The males are the problem. Let their owners pay for a fence (if the zoning even allows it) or bye bye doggie.

I agree that the onus is on the owners of the loose dogs in this scenario. But, just to say, I have always been CRAZY protective of my girls in heat down through the years. Always take more precautions than you think are necessary, because given the tiniest toehold, Nature WILL find a way!

I just consider it part of the price of poker in having intact females. It's only a few weeks a year, and that girl depends on me for protection. Even a "real" fence would not be good enough in the OP's situation. Even with, say, a chainlink fence, with loose males running around, I'd be taking that girl out on a leash for her entire season. And I'd probably be armed with a bat.

Some people I know who live in urban or suburban areas with showdogs even put their girls in the car and drive them elsewhere to potty the whole time they're in season, so that they're not marking their yards as a calling-card for every loose dog in the county. Extreme, maybe, but maybe necessary in some situations.
