Is 5 out of 15 an high amount of chicks to die in the first 48 hours

That is unusual. What are your temperatures? Do they have a cooler area? What type of food and bedding? What's the brooder made of? Any candles, air freshener, gas leaks? What type oh heating? Pasty butt?
Steel and plexiglass heater panels I don't know the exact temp but I judge by they are not buched up and not chiriping like crazy Naturewise chick food 18% no candels etc.

Have you reported to McMurray? Those that have died, were there any "symptoms "? Reason I ask is they had the outbreak of Avian Flu last month, That's alot to loose but I've had a friend that lost alot more, however we're in Hawaii so the distance & shipping issues greater. Picture of your set up would help, what are you using for heating; not familiar with "steel and plexiglass heater panels? You need to check the temp in the brooder ...

They may have become chilled in shipping and unable to warm up with the plate type heater rather than the heat lamp because the plate heaters don't warm the ambient air the way a heat lamp does. :(

A number of people have found this to be a problem and I have heard that some hatcheries are asking people to agree to use a heat lamp at least for the first few days.
