Is 6x10 big enough?

i have my imps in a 20x35 pen with red golds to but that is because that pen was already their and all i did was fix it up alittle the imps do alot of digging but would probaly be ok with a smaller pen but as wilds of pa said its trial and error

and as i said before their is no set way to keep and raise birds if their is then you show it to me

I just want to know the minimums. Its not that I am going to cram every bird into a small pen and try to mass produce them.

I myself would probably be a lot happier living on a 1000 acre ranch with a mansion in the middle of it but I do quiet well in my current home and have lived in much smaller spaces.

As far as the book "pheasants of the world their breeding and management" by Keith Howman. The suggestions in his book are fine but its not law. I wouldn't want to base everything on one mans opinion. I would rather trust the accumulated experience of many of the members here who have raised the birds for years. From what I can tell the size requirements in that book seem to be a bit large.


I asked my original question because I have an extra 6x10 pen. From what I can tell that my be a little small but will suffice for now. When I build a new pen, which I hope to do soon, I will make the pens within a little larger. I will probably have a very large pen divided into smaller pens of varying size for different birds with different needs.

Well let me the first to welcome you BlooRooster. I agree with you there are no dumb questions and i feel this forum is the place to ask questions and gain knowledge. No one knows it all . I have been raising pheasants for a few years and now peacocks as of last fall. I am on here every day and other sites trying to increase my knowledge. I have a new question probably every day I research. So once again welcome and I hope you enjoy your birds. Show us some pictures when you can.

Right now i have all my pheasants in a 4 X 8 pens which are really 8X8's divided in half and are 6 ft to 4 ft slant roof. One day I would like bigger pens with grass and fancy stuff, but for now this is the space I have and they seem to enjoy it. I have Swinhoe, Silvers, Lady A, RG, YG, Ringneck & Melastic in these. I try to give them things to do and places to hide. I was concerned that my RG might be unhappy since I was only getting 1 egg in the box and there are 4 hens, until i moved the box and found the stockpile of eggs. LOL All mine are pretty friendly birds used to humans and seem to enjoy spending most of their time buried in the sand of their pen, LOL. I think you will be fine, the birds will tell you if they become unhappy, and then you can expand if needed.

I will take the advice received here and use it to my advantage. Didn't mean for such a simple question to get so crazy.

Its evident that people has differing opinions on pen sizes. That's OK. Lets just keep everything civilized and realize everyone can have an opinion.

My question has been answered... 6x10 will probably work for rg but only a few at a time.
