I don't think that I currently have and mites or lice on my chickens, but I want to make sure I don't get any. If I spread 7 dust, is it not poisonous if the chickens peck it? Is there something better to use?

Sevin is not for ingestion, will irritate eyes and nose.

it no longer is labeled for poultry use because it was overused by consumers resulting in bird loss. therefor it can be dangerous, but if used properly it can be safe. any chemical can be dangerous. it is for killing and treating. preventing with a chemical like this is why it's no longer labeled. (i actually just talked to the makers yesterday on the phone about this very issue.)

what are you trying to accomplish with the Sevin? do not apply to keep things away. use DE instead as a deterrent.

by the way Sevin users...it is NOT being discontinued at the end of the year as being hyped. and Sevin 10% may be being brought back into stores. the company finds that consumers do like the product after all. it was not banned, and it was not pulled by the government as billed.

The old guy that I'm getting all my chicken information from has been raising chickens for over 50 years. He told me to throw a hand full of sevin dust where they dust. He said he has never lost a chicken to illness, my birds seem to never notice.

I use 7 dust but only in the 5% blend, it is much more forgiving and safe. you still must be very mindful of it's use.

O.K., then what do you do about that situation? How do you prevent lice and mites?

you can use DE to prevent lice and mites. it is NOT a chemical. it is little fossils and it can be used safely. use FOOD grade only and don't let anyone tell you that you can substitute pool grade. that's just not so.

do not overcrowd. keep litter clean and dry. sometimes it just happens. wild birds spread it.

mites in spring, lice in fall. (as a rule, but rules can be broken.)

hikerchick has a very good point. all chemicals are unsafe to a degree.
hairspray, dish detergents anything we use everyday have chemicals in them and guess what? they can be dangerous. (not necessarily will be though)
in most countries, the stuff we use every day to wash our clothes is illegal.

use ANY chemical as a last resultand use it sparingly, in moderation. just because someone 'has never had a problem' etc, doesn't mean they really have. average farmers don't test their flocks in any way to know that. chemical companies don't test to know that. check your bags of duramyacin. why do you think they don't provide the info for chicken dosing??? because they haven't PAID to test it.
i'm not AGAINST it and i'm not FOR it. we choose not to inoculate and not to medicate or treat with chemicals unless it is a last result. and when it is the last result we do things sparingly and with high caution.

(i am only clarifying all this so that this thread does not turn into one of the you can't medicate/you can medicate threads. you CAN do whatever works for YOU. it's YOUR flock.
