Is a rooster's crow really obvious?

My little bantam is 18 weeks old and hasn't crowed. I have tried to sneak up to the hen house and listen but have only heard low throaty clucks, is he a she? This chook is very easy going and friendly. They are free range.

Give him a couple of weeks. One morning you'll hear this awful screeching noise, think somebody ran over the cat, then realize your little guy made his first crow! He's a purty little thing.

Yes, at first it sounds as if he is strangling on something or trying to clear his throat. It comes in the fullness of time.
