Is anyone thinking of trying a different breed/variety this spring?

Are you looking for a red bantams? I have one of Lynne's (wwmicasa1) a red bantam roo that hatched about five weeks ago. Breeding cochins is not in my plan so I was advised to try to find a breeder interested in my cochin roos.

I want to, but am Nobly Resisting The Impulse.

I *need* to put energy and space into hatching a considerable number of eggs out of my sussexes, I want at least 2 dozen chicks to select down from and preferably more; and I believe I've talked myself into trying a few ducks, although whether it will be Cayugas or Magpies or just some feedstore pekins for the freezer remains to be determined.

Well, I'm also trying very hard to score a few poults of several heritage breeds of turkeys, but that doesn't count, they're turkeys, right?

I'm planning on (HOPEFULLY) getting eggs of Black and Mottled Javas, Lav Orps, MF Cochins, Bantam Phoenix, Bantam Sumatras, Lav, Red, and Cuckoo Silkies, maybe SQ RIRs and SQ Barred Rocks, and continue breeding and improving my Speckled Sussex, and hopefully get a little start on Light, Buff, and maybe Coronation Sussex, and also start on several project varieties of mainly Sussex, Bantam Phoenix, Ohikis, and a few Orps.

I am really beginning to feel the stress of so many chicken pens.

Of course it's winter and hauling water isn't fun.

I hope to cut back a little, and focus on a few good flocks.

Mixing my ee's in with my layer flock.

Large Fowl: I will have a Pen of SQ Light Brahmas. BLRW.

Bantams: SQ Mottled Cochins, Mille Fleur Cochins, Buff Brahmas, B/B/S Silkies, White Silkies

I'm also working on several new colors of Brahmas and Cochins. Which I'm not ready to share yet.

Winter has been hard and i seen a few of my breeds werent thriving this winter so i sold them to a nice man that will keep them indoors for showing purposes so now that leaves me with 8 just mixed and layer chickens so my plans are this:

- i have SQ swedish ducks so i plan to breed them heavily (wintering amazingly i might add for anyone interested in them)
- i also since i sold off most of my stuff i plan on getting speckled sussex in mid february to be my main focus
- i'm also planning on building two more pens one for my EE's and one for my pet chickens and chickens im not breeding but find pretty!
- and i also want to order some PQ lakenvelders and other interesting breeds so that i can have some eye candy!

those are my amazing plans! ive had numerous breeds and its been hit and miss for me so hopefully this will stick will see right lol!

I think I want some of those black amerucanuas that one fellow was showing off..also Chanteclers..But I love partridge rocks too..sigh.. And there's my original flock, out there courageously triving in his miserable snow. Maybe, we shall see what happens this spring. I know for sure I'm getting courtnix quail.

My plans are far off the normal chart - Aside from Black Copper Marans (well those aren't far . . ) I'm getting a Shamo pair. They won't be for eggs or meat, but merely their beauty. And perhaps selling of the young'ins. If I were to ever find a good breeder though, I'm also going Malgache. Aaah Naked Necked Oriental-type birds.

I 've got Delawares arriving next weekend from my brother, right in time for Christmas. So that's my main project next year, but still pondering heavily on a Barred Rock rooXGSL hens project to see what results I might come up with. I crossed Barred Rock rooXProduction reds and New hampshire hens about 3 years ago and had really good results, made some great layers (big eggs) and pretty cuckoo barred hens with a lighter pattern barring around the neck and chest area.

I've tried the chicken calculator for the BRxGSL cross but really don't get how the darn thing works so I'm just gonna do it in real time then I'll know for sure what's what.

P.S. If you go to Kooshie's web page the hens that are the first ones on there, the one she calls Snowneck. that's what a BR x a red hen cross looks like and the roos look like M to the Maxx's avatar.
