Electrolytes are typically not needed except in times of stress or dehydration. Were I you I would save my money and provide clean water and fresh feed to your birds.

It doesn't get any cheaper than this. 8 oz packet for $5.60. Sold at my local Agway. Bit less than half a teaspoon mixed per gallon of water. A packet will make 110 gallons. The yeast packet size Save a Chick brand is way overpriced for convenience. If you feel the need to provide electrolytes for extreme heat then I recommend using this. I've had the same packet for years. Use it for first water after hatch and once in a while we get long heat waves causing birds to hunker in shade and eat less.

The idea that salt is bad for chickens is a misnomer. Over perpetuated bit of misinformation that stems from a study done on salt intake and poultry mortality. What people seemed to remember from this long ago horrific bit of science is poultry died from salt. The fact of the matter is the quantity of salt we are talking about to produce mortality had to be injected. No birds died from voluntary ingestion. Poultry are fine with salt, the level of forced intake we are talking about would kill any animal including man.

Thanks for this post! I'll have to look into that mix, though I also like the idea of my own so I can add my own ingredients. I made one last night for immune boosting with Oregano powder.

This probably isn't much help for the question, but I had been using baking soda for dog accidents when they happen in the house on the carpet. At one point my mom vacuumed it up when cleaning the carpet and dumped it in the yard. There's a small pile of dust and baking soda. Not sure how long it's been there (not too long), but it's seen weather and the chickens ignore it.
