Is buying direct from hatchery less risky gender wise?

It's probably too early to tell for sure which are roos unless you are very experienced...I have 12 pullets from Ideal that are 5 weeks old now, and many of their combs are already pink/redish. I've only received 2 accidental roos from Ideal in the past (2 orders, 1 accidental roo each), and I'm almost completely positive I have 100% pullets this time. I don't know why their combs area already pink, but they don't act like roos at all.

Post pics of your babies here and the awesome gender-guessers on this site will help you out.

Yep bin was labeled pullets, asked the lady twice if everything in that bin was pullets. The BR's I am sure of 2. They are so light in coloring already even I can sex them.

This is more whats my next move. I think my next move is a nice ornamental layers mix from Mcmurry. I have avoided having chicks mailed because I am afraid our post office is inept ( its not so much fear as certainty. they loose my mail pretty regular now. what will they do to my poor chicks) but I am going to take the chance. I will have them mailed to a relative though because their post office has apparently been awesome to deal with on these live deliveries. Just wanted to know my pullet chances and they look good.

you will not have problem's with mcmurray i have not bought chicks from them in at least 12 yrs but they have always been good with my orders. the post office will call you to pick them up when they arrive. early that morning

I usually order from Ideal, which is less than a hour away. I have received very few roos and have probably ordered several hundred birds through the years. Never mind the few Roos I get.

I ordered 20 pullets from Cackle this spring---they sent 22, one DOA and one died 6 hrs after arrival. So I have 20 left. They are now 6 weeks old and there are 19 pullets and one ACCIDENTAL ROO. He's a cutie, though, and my first roo! I have eleven older hens, and it will be interesting to see how he takes over. He is a black australorp, and I can understand how the mistake was made. I don't think they did it on purpose just to get rid of a roo.

I've ordered from McMurray maybe 10 times and the sexing has been 100% correct so far. I ordered from another hatchery and got a couple of surprises! Sometimes surprises are fun but not when you really aren't ready for extra roos!

I have sold st. run chicks. The first person to take some said she knew how to sex them. If she was right that would increase your chances of getting roosters from a backyard flock like mine.
If you do it again ask what number in line you were.

Just saying.
