Approx. 6 month old RIR with chronic cough since we got her about 3-4 weeks ago. Will it get worse if untreated or do you suggest antibiotics as a precaution? Maybe a little watery eye but it now looks fine. No other symptoms, eating, drinking and laying eggs. Do you think she's contagious? Thanks in advance.

I would err on the side of caution and assume that yes, she is contagious. Hopefully you've had her in quarantine and can cull her before she infects the rest of your flock.

If she has been exposed to other chickens how long before they could get sick?

Depends on what exactly she has. Some diseases show up as soon as two to three days. Some take up to 3 weeks to incubate before symptoms start showing. But either way, if she's been with other chickens, they're already exposed, whether they are showing signs of illness or not.

Some respiratory diseases can be spread by handling infected birds, then handling 'clean' birds in an otherwise disease free flock. Contaminated hands, clothing, shoes, even vehicle tires can carry infection.
Chickens purchased from Craigslist, breeders, bird shows, swap meets, farmer down the road are risky. Nowadays it can be a challenge to find truthful and honest breeders, dont be afraid to ask questions about the health of their chickens. Hatcheries are the best choice and breeders that practice strict biosecurity are safe as well.
