is corn as main ingredient good for chickens?

Corn as feed.

I don't eat mammals that are fed corn to fatten them and try not to give much to my chickens. I suspect organic corn may be OK, but not the industrially grown product. In addition, those commercial animal meals are very processed.

I hardly compost anything from the kitchen or dining room: I give it to them. Today they are getting our left over Greek pizza and a little organic ground pork: $2.59 from our food coop. I bought a bale of hay/straw--whichever one has the seeds. It gives them a great alternative to the 15" of snow and ice on the ground here, plus something unprocessed to munch on. Tomorrow they will get the shells from our shrimp dinner. We give them any veggies or greens that we don't eat.

There is a lot of food that is just wasted that could be fed to our chickens. Let's feed ourselves right and give the leftovers to them.

I'm not too sure about that statement. I love corn. Just had some frozen sweet corn (picked fresh and frozen myself) about a 1/2 hour ago (actually had to do the dishes tonight

) I bet you don't want to see a pic of my "highly digestible" corn when I get ready for work in the morning

I obviously don't digest it well....

Carbs have made me "plump". I don't think I am fat, but when I jumped on that No Carb diet kick a few years ago, I dropped alot of my fat.​

so jim, that is my OPINION. ive raised show quality chickens for a year or ten and there is my OPINION, that from my own experience the corn both cracked and whole draws attention away from lay pellets.
ITS NOT WORTH SPIT IF YOUR TRYING TO GROW CHICKENS OR LAY EGGS ON CORN ONLY.
you could use a little more finess when replying to someone you dont know.

thats not my opinion, that is monsanto.

A pellet isn't even an organic item, it is man processed. If that is not modified...

If any one thinks corn is not a good feed source for animals, you should speak to the majority of beef farmers taking their calves to market and ask them what they feed them prior to market. Ever heard of corn fed beef?

Just because your system does not dissolve the entire kernel, that does not mean your body did not absorb the nutrients from it before it passed it through your system. Also your body is pretty smart. If your body was in need of more carbs, there would be less residue in the bowl. One last note on corn as feed, birds and people have a VERY different digestive system. As do bovine and horses. Ever seen corn in chicken poop?

I am not advocating feeding corn only. I do agree that corn is NOT a filler. It is a very good source of energy for all of us.​

It's hay, and there is a good chance that you are feeding them Round Up Ready alfalfa, from Monsanto.​
