You could call it both. It starts with the Araucana chicken that lays a blue egg. The Araucana was crossbred to create the Ameraucana which lays a green egg. The Ameraucana is cross bred with whatever to give you the Easter Egger which can lay any color of egg. It is really a mutt chicken that they gave a name to.
I'd say if you like green or blue eggs (which many people make over in a good way!!!) then I'd be saying "Awesome!!" My lone easter egger has very fluffy/fuzzy cheeks and is my cutest chick!! I love her!! And someone posted a thread asking people to submit photos of their easter egger roosters...and every one of them was GORGEOUS!!! I'd be happy!!!
I have 5 EE's and love them I ordered 5 hens but got one rooster, he is not exactly beautiful and got dubbed with the name Gracie as a chick the only white chick so easy to pick out. he has brown spots on his wings that I thought were poo, He is improving with age however. some of my hens are beautiful colors. I can't send pictures as my program only send through snap fish (I'm working on that) they all have tufted cheeks and are very sweet, even Gracie. our hens are young and so far I have given many eggs away and people LOVE them. I get a lot of laughs and wow's and of course the Grand kids think they are awesome!
There's nothing wrong with an Easter Egger. I have true Ameraucanas (blue/black/splash) from a breeder and I have Easter Eggers. One EE is really two color Ameraucanas crossed, which makes her color non-standard. Two are crosses of my Barred Rock rooster with my true Ameraucana hens.
My issue is when hatcheries, who do not have Ameraucanas or Araucanas sell their EEs as the real deal. Truth in advertising!
