Is feeding oatmeal to chickens ok???

Really?

Oats are an ingredient in a lot of commercial chicken feeds. I doubt the oats are cooked before the mills process it.

Hoo boy, I certainly hope the raw oatmeal isn't bad for them. my girls have been eating it (as a treat) since they were about 4 weeks old! They seem ok, and they are 11 weeks old now.

Oats are good for them raw or cooked. It's just nutritionally better cooked.

You know how puppies look when you put down a big wide pan of good sloppy puppy food?

That's what happens every time I go out with a big warm bowl of warm oatmeal - My girls are absolutely BONKERS for it...

I cook it ... always wondered about the raw thing- but have put the uncooked stuff in my homemade flock-blocks. They just love it

to answer your question - yes, it's okay... they'll lay tons of eggs and love you forever - especially if you make it for them on a cold morning

My girls love warm cooked oatmeal. I usually make it in the microwave and then stir in whatever leftovers or scraps that I have in with it. They get this 3-4 times a week right now while it's cold. Tomorrow it will be oatmeal, apple peels, leftover scrambled eggs (from them), some bread crusts and some egg shells (also from them). They go nuts for it!

Highcountrychickens........ PLEASE !!!! What exactly are "home made flock blocks " ???? I make up a treat for them with all kinds of birdseed with fruit and nuts, render some suet and add everything and then press it into pans....take it out when it's all set up and put it in their treat dishes. The suet is really good to warm 'em up......it's a "once in awhile" treat.

HighcountryChickens, could you post or send me your recipe for your flock block? I have been following a thread on here, but still haven't heard of a good recipe. I am not that great of a cook to be experimenting !! We could be in big trouble here if I started doing that!

I am thinking there are others too that would love to know too.

Mine LOVE oatmeal, malt o meal, grits, etc. Sadly so does DH so he has been a little, um....discontent...when he comes down for breakfast and finds the chickens enjoyed it first.
