Is incubation time for eggs the same when they're under a broody hen as when they're in an incubator

I love dogs sooo much, they are sooo smart and fun and the are just always there when you need them, like almost all animals.
I know, the beach is awesome, just a place you can clear your head and forget about all the troubles in your life.
tongue.png

I get so focused when i am looking for things on the beach that i have actually walked into people several times.
lau.gif

I love cats to, i have taken in a fair share of stray ones that were sick and nursed them back to health and then given them away to tourist that wanted them.
I love your cat names, is that why your username if DuckiesGarden because of your cat?
Our neighbors were moving a couple of years ago and they gave us their dog that was 1 year old that they had named Spot (real creative) and we wanted to name her Willow but we didnt want ot confuse her like you said so we started calling her Spot then Dot than Dottow then Pottow than Pittow then Willow, it was actually really fun trying to get her to Willow.

Well the starter pack contains an incubator, a brooder, a waterer, a feeder, the ova view and ova scope which are candlers and an incubator disinfectant.
I am not sure if i am going to use the crate because i would just be to worried about them getting out and slipping into the chicken coop...
I have never clipped my chickens wing feathers because even if they get out, the worst they are going to do is eat a couple of the weeds that they missed when they were free ranging and they dont really want to get out because they like it in there.
I know what you mean about the chicken wire, it is so usefull, i use it for everything,if there is a little hole in the coop patch it up with chicken wire.

I feel so bad about writing such little bit after you spent all that time to send that post, i am sorry.

I will send a longer post tomorrow because i have to go.

My father has always told me that a fresh laid egg from an already setting hen will hatch in 20 days. Something to do with the embryo(spot on the yolk). When the hen lays the egg it is already at her current body temperature, starting development. That is why an infertile egg remains a small dot, while a fertile egg shows a larger spot. Cell division has already begun. When the egg cools the cell division halts, until the temperature is correct again. He told me the reason it takes 21 days, with an amount of variance, is because the embryo has to wait several hours to re-start its development.

My dad isn't a biologist, but it makes sense to me.

I haven't ever heard it explained like that but it does make sense! Kudos to your dad!

LOL! I can definitely see how it'd be easy to get off in your own little world and bump right into people in a place like that! Do you have any favorite things you've found? Are all the tourists annoying?
Yeah, my user name is for that first Duckie cat. I saved him from some brat kids that were kicking him around a parking lot like a pop can. I was SO MAD to see them treating an animal like that! I took him and patched him up and he was with me thru thick and thin for more than ten years. I've never found out what happened to him, he just dissapeared one day two summers ago. Maybe he knew it was his time and went off to the woods or got lost. I was just sick about it. My dh thinks he sees him every now and then when he's out in the fields but I don't know, I think if it's him he'd come home to me. Anyway, that's how I came up with my name. I actually use it for the things I sell since most of them come from my garden, but I've ended up using it for my screen names too since I like it so much!
That was a good idea for changing the dogs name! I was laughing when I read that! I might try it! Nothing against Buddy but that name just doesn't seem to fit him, you know?
Nice kit! Wow, that's great that you get everything! You'll be looking like a professional in your garage corner when you get all set up!
If I don't clip mine, they fly right out and cause all kinds of ruckus! I only let them out when I can be out with them to keep em out of trouble. Mine with completely demolish a full grown flower bed in minutes! And my garden wouldn't stand a chance! I do pen them on my garden in the fall tho, they eat all the extra and till and fertilize it for next year. Now when it's fall, winter, and the start of spring I let them have total free range and stop clipping them(in case they need to fly away from something)That's why they try so hard to get out, they're used to being out most of the time then I cage them up and they get mad. I pick and grow greens for them when they have to stay in the chicken yard in summer. Plus throw them all the garden scraps and stale bread. We have corn fields all around us, right up to the yard on all sides,so if one of the chickens were to get out and get in the cornfield I'd never see her again. It's happened before, that's why I try to be more careful about keeping them contained. Plus the corn gives the coyotes and wild cats a place to hide close to the yard and that makes me nervous. Some cougars escaped from a sanctuary close to us a couple years ago and my dh has seen one close to the house here and he said someone saw one down by the river when they were planting down there. That's got me even more nervous than usual. I just hope they stay to the woods!
That made me think, what do you feed yours when they outgrow the chick starter? Do you throw em out scratch or anything to keep them in the yard?
Don't apologize for not being a chatterbox like me! LOL!

O
Getting a drink! I think the lighter colored one is going to be peachy colored like Georgie. Maybe. Nott sure about the darker one. Maybe it'll look like Ginger, maybe some other color that's lost in their genes somewhere. I'm hoping they end up being hens too. The more girls sitting on eggs the better!
Oh they are adorable I didn't see the picture before I sent my post! :D

Well once i found a puppy so i would have to say that was my favorite.
tongue.png

Yes the tourist are soooo annoying, they will stop you in the middle of the road and ask for directions, they will run over the stray cats and hedghogs and then the bodies just lay there till someone goes to clean them up, it is a very sad sight so i dont usually get out much in the summer, i only walk to the beach every week and that is plenty.
Some tourist are very nice though, they are polite and they speak English which i love because no one speaks English here.
Lots of tourist are bad but we just have to put up with them for the summer.
I had a cat that disappeared once to, i had actually taught her to fetch a rock (
lau.gif
) , she was all white with one blue eye and one green, she was beautifull...
hmm.png

Did you yell at the kids? How old were they? I would be really mad to...
Those arent the exact names that i used but you get the idea, i think for a week we were calling her Pillow.
lau.gif

How about calling him Bruno, it will be easy to switch from Buddy and that is what me 14 year old German Shepherd was named (just an idea).
big_smile.png

Here is the site that i am buying the kit from : http://www.farmcare.gr/poulerika/epoastikes/brinsea-mini-advance-starter-pack.html (excuse the Greek
tongue.png
)
Cougars, i wouldnt be able to sleep at night.
hide.gif

Lucky chickens, mine just get some weeds that grow everywere and when they get bored they go in the coop on there own, at the beggining i had to persuade them in with treats but now they go on their own.
Our yard is fenced in so i dont have to worry about them getting out, i feed them corn that they dont really care for but they do eat it.
I like your chicks drinking bowl.
lol.png

Yesterday when i went out to do the feeding and everything all the chicks had gotten out, i guess that chicken wire didnt work out to well, one of the five little ones (that i had babysat for the afternoon) had something wrong with its eye and when i looked closer, he didnt have an eye.
barnie.gif

Dumb chickens they must have pecked at it to much, the seven older ones mom was no were to be found and they were all sitting outside of their little pen so i started giving them some stale bread and they came and hopped up on my leg, i didnt know they were that social.
tongue.png

I have to build them all a little coop because the five little ones dont have a very good mom and the seven older ones dont have a mom so i dont want any birds getting them.
Trust me, i am a chatter box.
big_smile.png

A puppy! That's definitely a good find!
That's terrible that they just run right over the animals and leave them there! How sad.
hmm.png

And hedgehogs? Are they wild there? How cool! My brother had a pet hedgehog when he was over in Iraq, he would send us pics of it and it was so cute!
What a bummer with the tourists! I bet that gets old real quick! Especially the rude ones, I can't stand rude people. We don't have tourists here ( I can't imagine anyone coming from near and far to look at corn! LOL) but we do get a lot of people who sneak onto our property and the other farmers properties. Most are sneaking in to hunt or fish. We don't mind the people fishing as long as they don't leave a bunch of trash laying around(but of course they do) it more the hunters that cause problems with everyone. They bring dogs in and use them to hunt racoons(makes me mad, they only kill them for the fur, it'd be one thing if they were eating them, but it just feels like a waste to me to take the fur and nothing else)
somad.gif
Their dogs end up running everywhere and they've gotten some of our chickens before and one of our cats and I just can't stand it.
barnie.gif
I couldn't count how many people we've had to run off in the middle of the night. If they aren't hunting then they're back there doing drugs, or riding 4wheelers thru the fields tearing up the crops and who knows what else they're doing. I mean really, what buisiness could a person posssibly have at 2 in the morning on a gravel road in the middle of nowhere? It just seems like it never ends! Haha, I just thought of one time, it was after midnight and someone had pulled up to the pond across the street (with their lights off) and were sneaking around the pond and I had got this tv/radio/flashlight/siren thing at a yard sale, so we decided we were going to turn on the spotlight I have in my car and point it over there then flip on the siren and see what they did...That thing was SO LOUD! They got out of here in a flash! We were cracking up!
lau.gif

How in the world did you teach a cat to fetch a rock! Oh that is so funny!
lau.gif
I love the cats with two colors of eyes! So neat! That's so funny you said Bruno for a dog name! My aunt has a dog named Bruno! She never had any kids so her dogs are her kids and she spoils them rotten! And yes I yelled at those brats, I knocked one of them upside the head when I walked up. He said he was going to go tell his mom and I said absolutely, go get your mom so I can show her just what you were doing! Of course no mom showed up. They've probably grown up into troublemakers. You can always tell what kind of person someone is by looking at how they treat animals!
I looked at the starter kit your getting! That looks great! I like the incubators that you can see thru like that! How fun!
thumbsup.gif

I've never had any problems with mine going back in their coop, I think they know it's not safe once the sun starts going down! That and they can get away from the bugs in their coop. I am having to shoo the older chicks into the roosting room now tho. They keep huddling up infront of it instead of going in like they were. I think it's because of the older hens pecking at them. I don't really know what to do for that tho except to let them be until they all get their new pecking order figured out. I give mine corn too, (hard not to since it's free around here!) I've got an antique corn cracker that my dh hooks up to one of the tractors and I just pour the corn thru the top and ,tada, fresh cracked corn. It's a sorry thing to have so much fun cracking corn!LOL.
Oh no! I can't believe they pecked his eye out! Those mean things! What did you do? Did you get it cleaned out? I'd put some antibiotic cream in the hole so it doesn't get infected. And if you put some pine tar on it that might stop the others picking it. As long as they can see the red they'll keep at it. Stupid birds. Does it seem like it's managing ok besides no eye? As long as it doesn't get infected it should heal over. That chick needs a pirate name now. I agree, they probably need their own little coop until they can take care of themselves around the bigger ones. You could make them a coop out of one of those plastic totes with a hole cut in the side, it'd be weather proof and you could hose it out when they get it dirty. Put a piece of wood or some fat sticks in it for em to roost on. If you put a circle of wire around the opening they'd have a safe place the others couldn't get in. That mite work until they get too big for it. It would make a good brooder box too when the chicks move out if you found one big enough.

It is soo annoying, they dont even care. We have lots of wild hedgehogs, your brother is in Iraq?
Ugh, dont remind me of those dumb tourist, in the middle of the night they start beeping and yelling things because they are so drunk, it gets so annoying...
rant.gif

Those people must be really annoying, poor you.
Hahaha, you didnt get a video of that guy running off, that must of been soooo hilarious.
lau.gif

I didnt exactly teach her to fetch it, one day when i was cleaning out a little area i was throwing rocks and she started chasing them and when she got one in her mouth i would just call her back.
How many dogs does she have?
Are you going to keep the name Buddy or are you going to change it, if you are going to change in i would love to help you think of names.
How many kids were their there, i just hate bratty kids.
You should try making a little roosting area for the older chicks till they get their pecking order like you said.
His eye looks like it developed a scab so i am not to worried, i gathered them up and put them in a little pen till i get time to build their new one.
Ok, so now for the story i promised you...
I had told one of my friends about the chick story and she actually cried (
tongue.png
), i thought she didnt like chickens but i guess she does, so anyway today when i get home she is waiting on my front poarch with a little chick in her hand, i was like is that for me and she is like of course it is, i felt so bad for your loss. You should of seen the way i looked at her, it was hilarious. So she left and now i have a little chick (yay) it is three days old and soo cute, i guess the crate in the garage will have to do for now...
tongue.png

When my camera is fixed i will send you soooo many pictures.

Wild hedgehogs! That is too cool! They aren't a nuisance are they? I can't imagine they cause any trouble. At least you don't have to worry about one of those little things eating a chicken! Haha.
tongue.png

No, my brother is back now. He was over there for over a year and we worried all the time. I used to send him letters and draw him pictures and cartoons so he wouldn't be homesick. My mom even managed to send him a pumpkin at halloween(it's like our family's favorite holiday). He made it back all in one piece tho so we're grateful for that!
Poor me? Poor you! I think you've got the bigger headache!
barnie.gif
You can't run off your idiots like we can ours! LOL.
I think that is so funny about the cat fetching rocks!
lau.gif

I think my aunt has 3 dogs right now. I couldn't tell you what they are, I have no idea. I think Bruno is a shnauser(i know i didn't spell that right) and the other 2 are some kind of big hairy dogs. I'm not sure I haven't talked to her in a while.
I DO want to change Buddy's name! It's talking the dh into it. I think if I just start calling him something different tho eventually he'll get over it and go along with it. Buddy's supposed to be "his" dog since Rinty is "my" dog (his words not mine.)So I need to make him think the name change is all his idea. I'd love to hear some names you've thought of! I haven't been able to think of a good one yet.
thumbsup.gif

Well, when I shoo them into the roosting room they all go to the greenhouse thing and everyone is fine, it's getting past the others to get to the green house thing. I've got to go out and rake the old straw and stuff out anyway today so I'm going to rearrange it so the chicks don't have to go past the big ones to get to their spot.
That's good if it's already scabbed over, just keep an eye on it. oops, no pun intended!
What a great surprise!
yesss.gif
If that isn't the sweetest thing for someone to do! A brand new baby!
love.gif
What a great friend! What have you named it? What's it look like?

No, the hedgehogs are great, i found one once that was injured and nursed it back to health and then let it free in a field.
smile.png

Poor you, i would be sooooo worried, why did he have to go???
We dont have halloween here.
hit.gif

I have to go soon so i am going to make this post quick, sorry...
I will send the dog names in the next post because i have lots. :p
I havent named it yet and like i said in the post i have two now so do you have any names for them, i cant think of anything.
They are both black with little white marks under their chins.
One has two extra toes, one on each foot, it is hilarious.
