Is it a discomfort call?

Lately, my old male ( italian), makes a muffled sound, many times every night. ( It sounds exactly like a cat begging for food!). Some times the flock responds with the usual , after sunset, chirping . Is it a discomfort call or what? He is fine otherwise. Is it because he started matting again and the female still sleeps on her little nest upstairs, on a second "floor"? They are a couple and they live together, separated from the others with a mesh. She has never been overbreeded and she doesn't like the other roo. Is he unhappy? Sad? just saying "I'm here"? Any ideas?

What kind of quail? Can you get a recording and post it on YouTube and post the link here?
I don't really think I can. I should stay alert with the phone and even if I catch it, I'm not good with YouTube stuff. It's more like a murmur. I've read in another thread that their sleep maybe disturbed by my window lights, but my drapes are thick and there is nothing new to their environment. The other roo sleeps just fine.

Murmuring like grumbling, a variation on food-defensive calls, or a sort of muffled crowing? One of my younger males would sometimes make a half-crowing noise at night that sounded like his mouth was stuffed with cotton “b-b-brr”.

Good morning. Yes, something like the second one. He stopped doing it around 2am. Maybe he expects an answer from the female. (At some point, when they had the hall cage, if they couldn't see each other, they would start a "conversation". ) I hope this won't make them aggressive, because he is disturbing the hall flock's sleep.

He might just be sleepy and without light, doesn’t have the full stimulus required for a full volume crow? Does he crow normally?
I don’t think this is a sign of aggression. Sometimes but not always my quail will crow when disturbed or frightened at night, so maybe he hears something moving about and uses this as his alarm call.

nope. He was definitely calling for her. Tonight that she came "downstairs", he didn't make a single sound. (not even the night gathering crow). Thank god because he was starting to sound hoarse🤒. Strange couple they are💕
