Is it best to stay with 1 breed

Here's a thought. Get the roo of the breed you'd like to hatch, some hens the same breed as the roo and then you can sprinkle a few other breeds in there that LAY DIFFERENT COLORED EGGS.

I have a Marans roo, 11 Marans hens, 2 RIRs and a GL Wyandotte. The Marans eggs are really dark so when I hatch I only choose those eggs.

I have decided to go with a batch of 12 Golden Reds. I have been told that they are wonderful layers. They can lay 300+ eggs per year and if I wind up with a Roo that is fine but, I pray it is the RIR that I get one from cause I would love to hatch some eggs so that I want have to keep buying chicks.

I was looking fo the best layers and I already have one set of those. So with all that said I guess I am going to eventually have one colorful yard.

I have 12 RIRs now, I'll have 12 Golden Reds next Wednesday and if there are any cancelations I will be getting those also.

My husband is starting to give me funny looks and he is now calling me a chicken farmer. Oh well, that's fine by me. I would love to fill in my whole yard with'em I never knew they would be so much fun.

I am glad I found this forum and website cause I have gleaned so much info from all of the people in here and I really do appreciate that alot. As soon as I get the info on the Golden Reds I am going to post that also.

Thanks BYC!
