Is it best to stay with 1 breed

You can still get 'purebred' chicks from a mixed flock (for each breed for which you have a roo, that is, although that may be only 1 breed). You can periodically isolate hens (isolation is unnecessary if you only have the one roo, of course) and then put the same-breed rooster in with them til you've got as many fertile eggs as you want, for hatching. Then dump them back out. It may add an extra wrinkle into flock dynamics but people do it a lot, it seems.

Pat, probably going to be doing this next year when the chicks coming next month are grown

I chose to have a single breed (brahmas). They met all my criteria in what I wanted in a chicken and I liked the fact that they are a heritage breed and on the American Livestock Breeds Conservatory watch list. I'm very partial to them and think they are just gorgeous; esp. the roos.
Others like the mixed flock and it truly is what makes you happy.

I think if I ever had an M&M with feathered feet or furry fluff balls I think I might barf.

I can understand your thinking about having only the one RIR breed. And, you are obviously planning to allow some hens to set. You may want some very special (to you if to no one else) broody hens of a different breed.

Also, you've got one-half of the sex-link already. I really admire the looks of the Delawares. If they produce Red Sex-link chicks, you may be pleased to have all 3 varieties around.

My wish is that my favorite Black Australorps also had White Australorps in this country. And, that I had a little more room for a spectacular black 'n' white flock! Now, that's not mixing colors at all - they'd be black and white . . . but that's what would make me happy

I have 3 standard hens with 3 bantam RIRs, and one is a bantam rooster.
They just have to go through the pecking order thing and they get a long fine.

My RIR bantam hens look kind of funny putting my buff orpington in line. They are so much smaller than her, but they rule the roost.

I got the standards when they were 2 mos, so they were pretty much the size of the bantams. So after a couple of weeks of keeping them separated, they had a couple of days of the pecking order routine, but they get along fine, now.

So what breed of sex-link would you put with the RIR?
