Is it just me?

My friend has had house chickens for many years. The last few months she has been chicken less due to Marek's wiping out her 3 girls within a day apart. She used to feed her birds some chicken when she was eating (chicken from grocery store) and would reassure them - that the chicken wasn't a relative.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
If you eat meat you should know where it comes from and what kind of life the animal had before it was butchered. This is why I intend to raise broilers on my property as soon as feasible. A short happy life with a quick humane death is far more appealing to me than knowing my food had been inhumanely raised.

I understand your struggle. It may become easier in time to buy chicken and eat it. I hate chicken on the bone and don't like the skin so buying it that way helped me get over it.

A lot of us feel like our animals live healthier, happier lives than those on commercial farms, so eating our own meat is a good thing. Owning these animals really brings home the fact that an animal died to provide a meal for you and can change your perspective for sure.

Do you have only the 1 chicken?

Since my chicken fell into my life I have not been able to cook a whole chicken nor cut one up. I do relatively okay with pre-cut parts but the whole bird now creeps me out. My beef and pork intake has certainly increased.
I have pet chickens, none for food other than eggs. I did have a bit of a wobble a few years back and nearly stopped eating chicken, but damn I like chicken! :oops:And so do my chickens!:oops: Now what I do is buy assured chicken where I know it has been raised in the best possible way. Preferably pasture raised.
Im also very anal about wasting any. I just hate to think of a chickens life in vain just to be wasted and binned. I've grown soft though the older I've got we used to process turkeys for Christmas. It didn't bother me at all. I don't think I could it now.

Funny how people go all gaga about feeding chicken leftovers to their chickens, but think nothing of giving them scrambled eggs.

Yeah, I give the left over chicken bones to my birds. Can't give them to the dogs, too much risk, throw them in the garbage and they just stink. I say put the extra protein to good use.

Think of it as recycling...
