Is it just me?

I thought this was really interesting because I would trade in a heartbeat!!!! We have to move in about a year and one thing I am looking for in our new house is a good, usable barn on the property. I may not be able to build from the ground up but I AM really handy at fixing what is there. To me, my overpriced, so cutesy coop is lacking the charm of a wonderful old barn!!!

I thank God every day I live in America. we have freedom. Freedom to be buried in a Corvette in concrete, live in a mcmansion, drive any type of car I want (so far) and free to build one or more elaborate chicken coops if I so choose.

Unfortunately those freedoms are being attacked every day in this country.

sorry you are having such a difficult time- but if you think about it you may be better off then others- a house even if renting- money to buy chickens -a food source - and the ability to search for a job even if you don't have one at this point-
now if you read most post - a lot of the fancy coops are made of recycled material
some are just better at building things then others

some people make more money and have more to spend- that is their option
also their option to live above their means if they feel like it

the problem with the economy is that banks were told they had to lend to people that could not pay but that is a different subject

we have a small coop that we did buy the wood for - it cost less than $100- we work hard for our money and can spend it any way we wish

I needed a bigger coop and DH does not have the time to build for me as he is building an addition for my disabled child so I found one on craigslist for $500 still not outrageous but more than some can pay and less than some can pay-

instead of being concerned what everyone else spends their money one worry about your own chickens - is their coop safe warm cool and are they happy

you will find that if you stop worrying about what everyone else is doing you will be much happier

by the way you GF may want to see a lawyer about the drunk that hit her

he or his insurance or your uninsured insurance if he has none should pay restitution for disabling her

Good luck in your future enjoy your chickens and God Bless

I was brought up to save for a rainy day. I wanted chickens and decided I wasn't going to spend a fortune for them. I made a game out of it. What can I get for next to nothing. This is what I ended up with.

All this cost me was some screws and hinges. I had to buy the run wire but that was it. I have 6 coops and one turkey coop. 7 Runs and all cost me around $400.

I like this game.

Wow thats a neat idea and it looks cool to . Mind if i show hubby? We need a cheap one for the silkies and i love yours.

I'm glad your chickens give you so much pleasure roosterjerry. I'm sure your chicks are just as happy as chicks that live in fancy coops. They sound like they are very much loved, so they are very lucky chickens!

Grampa, I love your set up!

Not sure WHAT I should say, reading all the replies....I agree with a lot of them, different views.

You are right... it is shocking to see how much some can spend on a coop.... but they have every right, if their budget allows.

We are building our first coop. Mostly scrap! BUT it needs to be eye pleasing and function the way we need...it is taking 2 weeks to build so far (granted we can't work on it 24 hrs a day)

Hey RoosterJerry,

Sounds to me like you may need to think outside the "box" for a job. What about starting your own business? Are you handy? What about offering to build those fancy chicken coops for people? Have them buy the materials and do it at their house to use their electricity. Cost to you? Nothing if you have the right tools. Actually, it would cost the gas to drive over to someone's house. You can even put out an ad on Craigslist or something like it and that is free.

What about offering "rent a hubby" services. What do you like to do other than the chickens? Like dogs? What about a dog walking business? Look around your area and see what the needs are and if you can provide them. Many a company was started on little to no money for start up. Just the will to work hard.

I birth alpacas for a living. An alpaca midwife. Saw a need and made a business out of it.

Think outside the box and be willing to put in a lot of time and effort!
