I wasn't trying to turn them into humans by any means. LOL. I eat them, if I turned them into humans I would be cannabalistic! Someone made the comment that any processing of animals involves pain and fear, I was only agreeing but pointing out that any kind of life involves pain and fear. My chickens do not "love" me by any means, I am simply the food-wagon. The follow the horses around all day, doesn't mean they love the horses, just means they are just waiting for a meal. LOL I think you misunderstood my post and message. I probably should have quoted a few people that I was replying in respect to.

Hey, well then, we agree. I'm sorry I misunderstood you. I just felt from reading the posts that the thread was headed that way, towards humanizing animals. I agree with the pain and fear thing..its what makes us all fight to survive. I just think animals don't "think" of it as we do. This is a great thread!! Hope we can keep it on track. Nancy

I'm a meat eater. Had chops on the barby tonight as a matter of fact...yummy!

The ethics of eating meat are personal and based on many factors, and while discussions like this are interesting, don't really solve anything. I'm very impressed however with how civil we're all being.

I have experienced broad scale slaughter (visit to Better Beef Canada while in Aggie school) and slaughter done on the family farm. IMHO the family farm was a much better experience with the dignity of the animal always considered. I participated in these activities as much as they would let me....wouldn't let me kill or skin...but got to cut, wrap, make hamburg, sausages...you get the picture.

It is my sincere hope that I might some day be able to raise/grow everything that gets put on the table. Until that day comes I purchase my meat from a local abbatoir (family business thats been around a couple of generations)and try to buy locally whenever possible. And soon I'll be getting eggs from hens that I know are being treated well and enjoy thier life. Will I cull them when necessary?...you bet...I like soup.

It's not a problem! I just wanted to make my opinion clear if I was going to take the take to throw in my two cents. LOL It is so easy to misread and misinterpret things while typing. I realized later that comparing a chickens life experience to my own was probably an easily misleading statement. LOL Proof-reading several hours later...

I, personally, do not believe they rationalize things like we do. Yes they have a level of intelligence that allows them to do similar things as us and we share basic drives with them. To me though, there is a definate difference of operation, if not intelligence. Intelligence does not feel like the accurate word though. So I'll stick with operation. Animals do not murder, they kill. They do not rape, they breed. They do not torture, they play.(cats...

) *shrugs* Different levels of operation.

We're not debating scripture here. It's OK to say you follow the bible as your philosophy. But, let's use our own words here, K?? - MOD

No offense taken.

It's just boring for non-christians to watch a debate over word definitions I'm sure! I believe the point is well made that the bible supports an omnivorous diet. Enough said.
