Is it morally right to breed more chickens????

lol, sure hope that woman is vegetarian (or even vegan) or hypocrisy has just reached new heights

Don't worry at all, just continue what you are doing. There will be plenty of people who would be happy to help you if you end up with more chickens that you need, even if it is just to eat them (and they will have had a much better life than any store bought bird).

Like was said ignore the lady. When is the last time you heard a plea for money for a chicken shelter? Plenty of cat's and dog's but no chicken. When is the last time you saw a "chicken" welfare line?

I know there are people who will take my unwanted (by me) birds and make soup. Probably got a freezer full. Some folks have no idea, just need a cause, and as far as this chicken breeder is concerned there are more noble causes to take up.

Pineapplemama is square on... This person has some agenda. Let it go. Speaking for myself... this is a hobby, that makes me very happy. and I get to share my pleasures with others by giving eggs to elders. I would never expect a quilter to use only clothes from the good will for her squares. Although that might be an interesting challenge, we each have a right to pursue our own joy... as long as it's not hurting another. I hug trees but that's not the only thing I hug

I hug my Fuzzy Butts too... whether I get them from a hatchery, co-op, neighbor or hatch them myself.

Whether a breeder of top quality show dogs (of any breed) produces a planned litter, with a waiting list or not does nothing to contribute to the shelter population. Those pups often are sold with contracts that promise to take the dog back should the buyer not be able to keep the pet. We are getting brainwashed that it's some sort of sin to breed purebred cats and dogs and heaven forbid we show the animals. Statistics indicate that canine behavior problems are most often reported as a reason to release a dog to a shelter or to a rescue. I've seen many rescue dogs given up for housebreaking failure, or because they bite.

I've been involved with the sport of purebred dogs for 42 years. While I no longer breed dogs, I support Americans' rights to do so. I'd love to live in a world where there were no dog pounds or shelters, but that's just not reality. People die, or lose homes/jobs, or divorce just to start. Sometimes a dog gets too sick for the family to afford treatment so they bring it to the shelter, and that dog gets added to the statistics, as do the elderly dogs people bring to euthanize. I've been on the board of humane societies and on purebred rescues. When I bred dogs, I spayed/neutered the vast majority of pups I didn't keep to show before I put them in homes (got burnt years and years ago, so I decided I'd make sure I didn't get lied to again). I've taken back a number of dogs and now have a dog back the owners overfed, so now he has heart failure. I've taken back a 15 year old dog I bred when the owner died and mourned her when she died a year and a half later.

People who give homes to shelter dogs are wonderful. They love those dogs and they give them the best of everything, Yet there are dogs who have no homes, but not everyone wants or is cut out to adopt a shelter or a rescue dog, and that's ok.

As far as chickens go, I think it's far worse on the cruelty scale when you look at how factory farming treats poultry. Just because we don't eat dogs in this country (they are a food source in other parts of the world) doesn't mean dog breeding is somehow different than breeding purebred chickens. In other words, neither is wrong.

This is a dog descended from my kennel (bred by a longtime friend of mine):

Why doesn't she have as much right to exist as a dog that somehow ended up as a stray?

FourPawz and Pineapplemama said it well. I, too, am tired of the limitations that responsible folks have thrust upon them by the actions of the irresponsible. We raise rare breed top show dogs and preserve a breed that you would never see in a shelter. You could be on a waiting list for years to get one of my dogs and if you saw one on the street you'd stop and admire their beauty, yet, I constantly listen to the whining of how breeders are to blame for overpopulation. Very few shelters house dogs from responsible breeders. And for the record, how do you have a closed flock if you don't breed your own chickens?

I agree with what everyone is saying on here ... I wonder ..........

The chicks that don't get sold, does the hatcheries try to sell them locally or do they just destroy them without even giving them a chance for locals to come buy them???

I feel sorry for the ways that hatchery chicks must die.

You wouldn't have your chickens if you didn't love them and care about them so go ahead and breed them if you want.

My Aunt walked into a 'farm store' and found 50 chicks that had not been purchased. Just crowded in those little metal boxes for over a week. They had no plans for them, so of course she now has 50 extra chicks. I guess we inherit a lot of our craziness. I did the same, but with only 6 last year.

As for hatcheries I would like to know!

That, to me, is the definition of our Constitutional Right to The Pursuit of Happiness.

I can own a gun, but I can't kill people because (duh) it hurts someone else.

and so on.

Same with chickens. So long as MY eating habits aren't in anyway forced on you then keep your nose out of my kitchen... or be prepared to not like what you see you peeping Tom you... "Inherent risk in criminal activities"... spread the word.

I agree, it's ridiculous. Here's the flip side of the coin.......If she's such an animal rights advocate, then she should be working to shut the hatcheries down for their factory style chicken reproduction, not to mention their living environment. Not those of us who take good care of our chickens.

I 2nd the person that said I hope she's a vegan or vegitarian!
