Is it my fault the rooster doesn't like me?

The crazy thing is I have 3 other roosters that are the same age and have been with me since they were chicks and they don't try to attack me.  They and the head hen try to stop him.  I haven't hit him - just try to walk him away from me.  He got after me today when I had the hose in my hand - he got sprayed and man he hated that.

Even when of the same flock (assumed similar genetic background and rearing conditions) you will have variation. On genetics side many genes involved even within a family and even identical twins can behave differently do to slightly different experiences growing up.

The walking away part I suggest you refrain from. Getting into his space OK but giving him the feeling of being pursued is not.

What should I do when he jumps up at me? He usually does it when I have my back to him walking away. I cant walk in the yard without him heading towards me.

Act as if he is not there, even when he strikes. Ideally no discomfort for you realized so wear proper clothing. Do no orient on or away from him. You want him to think he can't impact your activities.

This is what works best, I have seen. They will eventually get bored or unassured, not as self-confident. You are just too cool and macho to notice the little wimp making a fool of himself. You are beyond the pecking order.

Thanks to everyone for the advice on how to deal with my problem rooster "Lester". I thought I would give an update. Lester is in the fridge.

Reach down and carry him around like a football once in a while before he gets spurs. You'll both get used to each other and if anything you won't be hesitant around him anymore which he can sense. I inherited one that makes yours look cuddly and that is what I did...if anything he didn't want to be 'loved' anymore and left me alone. Sadly he is no longer. (Ignore the bedhead is was early)
