is it normal for hen to sit down in shade a lot when it’s warm?

I’m a new chicken owner. I have a hen that is right at the laying age. Today we had our first 90+ degree day and she has stayed in the shade slightly panting most of the day. She is still eating and drinking regularly, but then returns to the shade and just sits down. Is this normal? Her behavior seems standard otherwise. I don’t know how to tell if she is sick. She also hasn’t laid any eggs yet - I’ve had her for 12 days. Do they act this way when they’re getting ready to lay?

Sounds like the heat is the issue. One thing that can help them cool off a bit is a shallow pan of water to step in and cool their feet. I use a large planter saucer since it's not slippery when wet, eays to get in and out of, and too heavy and shallow to topple over.

Yes it's the heat,my rooster also does lay down at times when its hot,for the laying problem,if you only have her for 12 days she might be getting used to the new surroundings give her more time.

Yeppers.
Hot birds will pant and hold their wings out from their sides.
They'll also drink a lot more leading to juicy poops.

Deep all day shade is best but....

I give a dose of Sav-a-Chick electrolytes/vitamins about once a week during heat waves.
It really seems to help....started this after they saved a heat stroked hen once.
Can mix up a smaller amount, just wrap the packet tight and store in a dry cool place.
Always have plain water available too.

BIG(9x14x2") chunks of ice last all day for wading, sitting, and sipping.
Much more useful to the chickens than frozen foods and treats.

Make space in your freezer!
