They should stay on chick crumbles. It is a balanced complete diet.Is it ok for young pullets to eat barley or should they stay on chick crumb?![]()
Assuming you are talking about the chickens in your photo, they are on the ground so they have grit in their gizzard. They can handle barley or any other grain. Barley or any other single food should not be all they eat, they need a balanced diet, but some barley as a treat would be fine.Is it ok for young pullets to eat barley or should they stay on chick crumb?![]()
Thank youI feed a small portion of sprouted barley (along with other sprouted grains) to my chickens almost daily. Mother hens have their chicks eating it within a few days of hatching.
I agree that it should be given only as part of a balanced diet. I've also read that sprouting barley makes is easier for chickens to digest, so that's what I do. That being said, I once wound up with an 80 lb bag of crimped barley that I fed on a fairly aggressive basis to a group of growing meat chickens. They loved it, and I noticed no ill effects.
