is it ok to give chickens apple peels

I throw them anything from the kitchen as far as scraps and they eat what they like and leave what they don't.

My chickies love them. When I am canning apples they hit the jackpot. Actually they hit the jackpot when I am canning or processng anything fruit or veg oriented. I just dump out all my leftover. They really love melon rinds. Last year our local store had a great sale on cantelope and we were eating cantelope like it was going out of style. The chickies were in heaven.

Hey Ed - just keep in mind that whatever they won't eat attracts predators. I usually handfeed the rotten brats, and when they are thru and bored with me, I put the rest of it in the garbage!

Yes I know that but its kind of hard for predators to come around when the chickens consume almost everything that I throw in to their run. I threw kitchen scraps in there 2 days ago and there happen to be an onion in there, well as we all know they don't like them soo low and be hold that is still in the run, they will let you know what they like and don't like.

actually you are throwing the best part of the apple away,, most of the flavor is just under the skin..

when it is apple season around here, the chickens see or hear an apple fall to the gound, they run to it and in seconds it is gone. I think this is also healthy for the tree.. no rotting apples to rake up and the chances of disease and insects are reduced.. I never spray my tree and I do not have any insect problems.. no wormey apples..

It is kind of funny to see all the comments about whether it is OK to feed chickens this or that. The better question is probably what wont they eat?

When we moved to a home with a 5 acre lot and the chance to have chickens we had also planned to have a compost pile --- we have nothing to compost because the chickens eat just about everything. We will chop up some of the veggies to make them easier to eat, but everything goes to the birds.

Last holiday season I was helping clean up after the office pot luck. There was a ton of leftovers that no one wanted to take home. I got a box and lined it with trash bags. We put all the leftovers in the boxes. Everything from salad to pizza to potatos, and desserts, etc. went in. One lady was afraid to throw in a meat gravy that had ground meat in it -- I told her to add it to the pile. The chickens went crazy and with it being winter they worked the pile until every single scrap was gone.

My chickens love watermelon and pumpkins and will eat them until they are just a shell. They eat onions if they are diced. About the only thing that they leave alone are avocado seeds - probably because they are too big. They also seem to love shrimp tails. When I got a deer I had the trimmed out the rib cage and with the chickens running free, they discovered that they also liked venison and were hitting the few scraps of meat.

So, what don't chickens eat?

Ironically miine won't eat apples.
