Is it possible to heal? pic*very graphic*

Keep her inside so others wont peck on her. Use benadine to clean the wound and clean it daily. I'd wrap it to make sure maggots don't get in there. Ones those get in there its really hard to get them out. Make sure she continues to eat and drink. Give her about a drop maybe 2 of polyvisol and start her on antibiotic water. I've done this with my birds and things have worked well with them. Good luck...

for the aspirin threehorses told me 5 5grain aspirin tablets in a gallon of water as i have a hen who cant walk on one of her legs. threehorses can tell you a lot she is a whiz on chickens donna

Hi, I had a chicken that was attacked by a dog. I was totally freaked out by the punctures, I went ahead and washed them quite well with a mild, MILD, soap. Most soaps have harsh cleansers and foaming agents, even gentle baby ones. I use Dr.Bronner's castile soap.

Other than keeping them clean(washing twice a day) I made sure to keep her in a warm, dark, quite place(box with towels in warm closet)I fed her nutrient dense foods and left her alone.

Often normal wound care is too harsh and will hinder the healing process. Betadine, Bactine, Hydrogen Peroxide etc... All kill white blood cells which are needed for healing. An initial cleaning might be ok, but I would not use it daily.

If you would like to "soak" her, you could add non-iodized sea salt mixed at 1/4 teaspoon to 1 cup warm water. Anything stronger is too harsh.

I have used this basic aftercare with great results, she lived for many more years, with no ill affects. I had a chance

to try it out again when one of our roosters got out and was able to fight, through the fence, with another rooster. My husband thought he was dead, we did basic wound care and force fed him. He also lived for many more years.

A few things I would try now if I had another injured chicken, Gentian Violet(on wound) and Colloidal Silver(in water) and Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Coconut Oil on the surface in place of traditional ointments.

If you do go the anti-biotic route, also give probiotics daily.

Hoping your girl is on the mend, best wishes-Christine

I had a chicken that looked just as bad and she survived and we are planning on eating her eggs. We cleaned the area with water and dried it. Applied neosporin followed an hour later by blucoat. We kept the chicken separated from the flock and reapplied neosporin and blucoat once a day. She recovered totally and now is apart of the flock. I have read that neosporin WITH PAIN RELIEVER is poison to chickens so I used regular neosporin.

I had a turkey chick somehow mysteriously almost rip its wing off. Wasn't sure if he would make it. Brought it inside rinsed the wound twice a day with betadine and 4 months later Gimpy is thriving. His wing is a little deformed but I'm glad I didn't put him down. Give it a chance. If she is eating hen she doesn't feel that bad.

Thank you all for your kind and encouraging words. My DH cleaned her up a little today. He found several maggots and picked them out. We will check tomorrow for more. She is still eating and drinking a little every few hours. She limps badly when she tries to walk, but a little while ago she was preening herself. She's still hanging in there...

Chickens heal from wounds amazingly. If you found maggots in the wound, you need to watch her really closely. You really ought to bring her inside where flies are few and far between until her skin regrows.

Aspirin water is a good pain reliever, I am pretty sure dunicorn's website lists the dose. Blucote is good on wounds. Peroxide ONCE, as several have stated. Remove any proud flesh as it impares proper healing.

I would not have thought it possible, but our little girl has recovered and is out with all the others!! I just can't get over it! We kept her inside for about a week, then let her out - supervised - for short periods of time. A few nights ago we let her go into the coop at dusk. We checked on her several times and let all the girls out very early and she's been back with the flock since. Thank you all for your information and sharing.
